Thanks Alastair, that sounds pretty much like my process as well. I am doing things a little differently, since I am still working in Elements 2. Now that I am shooting in digital much of the time, I often do a quick conversion to grayscale just to get an idea of the potential for a B+W image. By the way there have been some good articles on the digital/B+W thing in a British mag "Photography Monthly" especially the September 2004 issue. I find the Brit style more instructional than the U.S. magazines, which have more ads and tend to focus on equipment news. Looking forward to your B+W phase. As you can see from my portfolio I am currently doing the colour thing, but that is sure to change as B+W is my true passion.

Hi Richard,
The way I tend to do it is to use the Channel Mixer, tick the 'monochrome' box then adjust all the sliders (it defaults to Red) to get the desired effect.I usually end up with a negative amount in the blue channel (it seems that on most cameras thats where the noise is so that reduces the amount of noise in the final image). I think in this case it was Red=50, Green=70 Blue=-20, and the bottom slider set to -10 to darken it a bit (from memory). I found an excellent article on the web about it (can't remember where but I'll have a look and if I find it will give you the link)...
Sometimes B&W gives a far more striking effect I find... always worth trying on an image!

Hi Alastair, thanks for the comment and the conversion. Which method did you use???? Until I got my D70 I had always shot with B+W film (BW400CN or Tri-X for the most part), so I am interested in the various ways to convert. So far I prefer using the red channel only, and then converting to grayscale. After that I usually play with the levels and contrast sliders until I get the right effect. We normally get some pretty stormy skies in April (so far it has been all blue skies and sunshine), and when we do I'll be out there with my F80 and B+W film of course as well as the D70.

Nice shot of this old ruin Richard... The details colours and composition are excellent... If you wanted a more moody feel you clould try black and white... (I may be having another B&W phase coming on I think...!)..I attached a sample to see what you think!

Thanks Fadel. You can actually see this structure from the upper parking lot in winter, if you know where to look. The property must have been stunning in it's prime.

Thanks Chuck. Sadly both this old farmhouse and the ruins of Castle Glen which I have posted often, are owned by large developers. The best we can hope for is that they will retain the ruins as a part of their resort plans.

Thanks Carol. I love old structures as well, and I am lucky enough to have several to shoot in the Collingwood area. This one was shot digitally, but I still prefer to shoot B+W film.
