About I like the way the subjects just happened to be framed by the wall's shadow. Caption follows: A teenage Afghan girl comforts her young brother as US troops distribute pro-democracy fliers to local officials in Kandahar City, October 6, 2004. The fliers were distributed to support the upcoming Afghan Presidential Election.

Truth be told, the little boy was affraid of the men in uniform (both American and Afghan Nat'l Army) with their Humm-vee and all the guns. Of course, I've never had my ear pulled that hard, either...so....

:)Thomas, I think the little boy made that face because the girl pulled his ear, not because he was afraid of Paul :)
again, I think this is a very strong and realistic picture.

Thank you for your comments. I struggled with cropping this photo, following the rule of thirds...but each time I tried something, it just didn't look "right". As a former instructor, it was very difficult for me to "break the rules", but in this case, I felt it was my only choice...thanks again for your constructive criticism.

Paul, this is a quite remarkable shot. The little boy seems to be really frightened of you, though!
I agree with mandy, cropping might be effective here. I just can't decide wheter the crop off the left part (kind of obvious), or the right-hand part - even if you loose the corner of the wall.

Paul,
Very nice imagery and yes the contrast of the light and shadow make it more interesting. You can also see fear in the little boys face that is heart wrenching.
The only thing I can suggest here is dont follow the standard of 'centering'. But yes she looks like an angel there to protect the little boy. Nice capture!
