Thanks Tony. This is the sort of comment I would love to receive all the time! I've been out again today photographing dragonflies with my 70-300 and tripod, having first made a careful study of DOF tables. On this basis, I went for something around F32. I still didn't get the shot I wanted, largely because at F32 the background is far too busy. I will seriously have to consider the 105 macro lens (Sigma OK, or do I really have to splash out and go for the Nikkor VR?)
BTW, I had already discovered that these creatures will come back again and again to the same place - I actually find them quite co-operative!
AJ
PS. Will look into the Cheese Festival, but we've got a livestock fair in Tarifa at the weekend and that should also be of great interest.

Very nice combination of colours and suitably o.o.f.background.It is slightly overexposed and rather too much of the insect is out of focus. What you needed here was a tripod and a 105mm macro lense.I've found that if you stay focussed on the twig they've just flown away from they invariably return to it!Just a question of not moving away in exasperation and putting up with consequent pains in the neck, back or both-it's the photo that's important after all!I'd go for the slow s.s.and f11 or there abouts. Have a good week, Tony. Ps.there's an important Cheese Festival in Teba next Saturday / Sunday,I heard it was really good last year ,so if I can convince anyone else, we'll be there on Sunday morning.

I'd stay with a fast shutter speed because they move around a lot. You can't get down much with your apearture with that lens. Good bokeh but could be just a little sharper with the focus. You got to get lucky with these. I've had luck by just wanting and watching which spot they like to land in.

Thanks John. I had been wanting to find some of these to photograph for a while. Yesterday I went up into the mountains above Tarifa - many areas have been fenced off by the landowners, but if you're prepared to climb a few fences, you find yourself in some wonderful wild countryside. Which happened to be full of dragonflies yesterday. They were actually quite co-operative: I found that if they were not quite positioned right, I could wave at them, at which they would fly off and then come back again, with luck posing at a better angle. What I didn't work out, though, was how to get an improved DOF. Next time...

Nice macro AJ....just the focus point is more on the left wing than on the insects head...which is quite not all in focus....well done. Best wishes Hilton :)
