About Full zoom, macro and 3x magnification filters = rather shallow DOF!

As usual, serious critiques are welcome!

Delicious colours! On this level of intimacy, flowers look interesting too, not just beautiful...

Thanks Irena! The Sigma lens is a good cheap option - there's certainly one with a Canon fit. But I'm hoping to upgrade to a Nikkor 105mm for macro work at some point...

Hey, you DO have a flair for this John! That 105mm Micro opens to 2.8 too, so there's a few advantages. I did the exact same thing, starting with the Nikkor 70-300mm but finally just getting the 105mm. Much better IMO. Also, you can use kenko extension tubes with the 70-300 and lose the 3x . . . it will really cut the DOF too.

This is good stuff! :)

Doyle I <~~~~~

Thanks for the comments, Joggie - just the sort of advice I need! I have been wondering for a while whether it would really be worth investing in a 105mm micro, and your observations suggest it definitely would.

Lovely image AJ - The magnification you got is great but the extra glass in front means loss in definitin - slight though and most noticable in the fine hairs. Save up my friend for that Micro - you are going to excell in this genre!

Thanks Ali. Actually, I've just realised that this was only 3x magnification - I'd removed one of the filters as I found I was unable to get a good composition with such high magnification. But with 7x, the DOF really was shallow: move a millimetre and everything became a blur!

WoW 7x magnification ! Well achieved, But in my opinion the DOF isn't that shallow. I mean it's just right ! I especially like the glittering ends of the red part !.. great shot.. wonderful colors and tones.
My best,
aLi
