No, no, AJ, it shouldn't worry you at all! You know, getting around is always good for the new, the things we did not have any opportunity to deal with at all, and so it is only natural that they will hit our eyes, and will make us want to try some shot. Of course it will not be "easy" and of course it will make us also wonder what/how we have to do it, but it is exactly that which gives us new subjects and new ideas. Studying many differnt subjects, perhaps also making whole series about them is a very very important thing to me.
So, for this one, first of all thanks a lot for the detailed description of the circumstances. The whole situation you described reminded me of my first closer contact to city graffiti and I must say, it was photographically overwhelming and really hard! But, exactly as you did, I gave it some tries and considered afterwards what could be done better.
I think that tghe dynamics of the whole situation, considering the motion involved here, is quite tangible from the image. The question could be, how to retain the details and still catch those nice lighting effects? It is also a general question with which I had contact very often - could it be that one just has to somehow make the "best compromise" between the two?
I think it is exactly such questions and the necessary thoughts that at the end enrich our horizons and make us more and more skilled as the time passes by.
And so I can only say, just continue your studies and have a spectrum as wide as it can be. The answers to problems for one kind of question will surely be very helpful to some completely differnt problem too, I guess.

Many thanks for another detailed and thoughtful critique, Nick. People often ask me what subjects I photograph, and I usually answer that I'll photograph anything. This worries me a bit, since most "real" photographers seem to specialise in particular subjects. And this, surely, is how individual style develops.
As you probably guessed, this subject was new for me, and I didn't find it easy. Not sure I could have gone for a wider aperture with this lens - 5.3 is probably max at 220. As you can just see from the shadows, the shot was taken towards the sun. This provided a nice lighting effect in the dust that was being kicked up, but as you point out does result in some loss of detail in the legs of the horse.
Anyway, I'm sure I'll be having another go at this subject and will see what improvements I can make!

I think here, AJ, some more definition of details on the galloping legs/feet of the animal would make it stronger, while of course the general view of its fast and elegant gallop is still preserved. Perhaps also the contrast to the earth is not as strong for defining the silhouettes of the horses legs/feet as simple as some background of a lighter color might have done. But still I can see the tension of muscles that work so perfect together in order to define that kind of not only fast but also so elegant motion.
The depth is also well presented by keeping only the earth on the foreground in focus and letting it get more and more diffuse back to the background. This provides a real feel for the place where the horse is standing - or galloping.
A nice idea - could perhaps a wider aperture make a bit more of the details visible?

Great dynamics and lovely backlight in this one!
I'd perhaps crop it at the top a bit to give it more lightness, which is the feature that stands out most - but not sure. Perhaps my computer monitor is too small to fully appreciate it ;-))

Great sense of movement from a pin-sharp stop action shot. An excellent example of one small element of a subject standing in for the whole. The angled lines are very dynamic, of course, and the rim lighting on the outside of the front legs (and particularly the one hoof) help to keep the different legs separated. The only really critical thing I can think of to say about it is that the front legs do get a bit lost against the back legs, which might be improved by dodging them slightly - or not. Impossible to say. I really like this.

Thanks Jan. I didn't realise beforehand how difficult this shot was going to be. There was a split second when the horses were in the right position. But they were galloping in circles, so I had lots of chances (and was able to keep out of the way!)
