Thanks Sam,
It is a portrait of my wife from 1972. It was taken before we were married. I developed my own Black and white images at the time. This is a scan of one of my prints.

Thanks Janet! And, my wife thanks you as well!
She says, "I hope people realize how old that shot is!"

This is one of my favourites.
Every now and then I seem to be able to duplicate a pretty good simulation of grain in Photoshop. The problem is, I never really document how I did it. When it comes out right, people usually respond to the grain in a favourable way. My recent swan image is a good example.

Well, besides your wife being gorgeous...this is a perfect portrait! Love the grain of the film...digital just isn't the same :(

Jonathan,
Thank you so much for your positive comment on this photo.

This is my then girlfriend, now wife taken in 1972. She was pleased with the comments also. There is always a little apprehension on her part if I post an old shot of her.

When I converted the photo to digital, in photoshop, I had the original in front of me and tried to remain as faithful to the original print as I could. You are right, there is a certain kind of appeal to the high grain images that we used to print all the time. In those days, I almost exclusivly used Tri-x 400 asa with the same developing method for the negatives and same process for developing the paper.
Good luck finding your negatives! The good thing is, if you don't find the one you are looking for, you will find many more to play with.

Lovely empathic portrait - the camera almost reaches out to her. I have a similar kind of shot of my then girlfriend, now wife which this reminds me of. It was taken in 1970 but I can't find the print so now I'll have to search a million negs and re-print it !

I like the style of the shot and the high contrast B&W printing - it somehow seems more expressive than the pin-sharp grainless colour typically coming out of the modern equipment - I nowadays often modify the images to achieve a degree of inexactness which mentally allows room to breath - in the past it was there anyway because of the technical limitations. I suppose this partly explains the popularity of crude Holga-type cameras as a reaction to all the perfection.

Best wishes, Jonathan

Thanks again Fadel,

I started using Tri-x 400 asa or equivilant, and hardly ever used anything else for B&W. Same film, same paper, until I got it right. (some exceptions)
