About "The Island" is Vancouver shorthand for Vancouver Island, which is just visible through the haze. I spotted this scene on a dock at Half Moon Bay. I used a railing in desperate need of cleaning (darn seagulls!) in lieu of a tripod and held a blue Vivitar 80B colour correction filter in front of the lens (it didn't fit on the camera) for some added colour snazz. No PS work with the exception of horizon readjustment. (Hey! You try shooting straight one-handing a 210mm lens at full zoom!) As always, I appreciate your thoughtful critiques (and hope to get around to sending some of my own one of these years . . .)

..oh my God.. another wonderful shot where the blue is big, layers and lines so deeep and so delicate have created one optimal beautiful capture and the idea "to wait for" the boat...
my best wishes..

Beautiful monotone, very nice contrast of the blu tones and the ship silhouette. I think this would look great also cropped on top as to get a panoramic format and obtain a more balanced composition
Beautiful scen. I like it

Thanks (as always!) for your comment, Stefan. It took me awhile to see the vertical artefacting you were referring to, but now I think I've got it. If it's the slight, constant streams across the photo then I suspect it's my scanner glass, which admittedly could use a cleaning.

I agree this shot could use a little more water. I believe I was trying to exclude a second boat, but my memory of that is somewhat hazy. Perhaps I dreamed it up as an excuse. ;-)

There are some vertical artefacts but I'm assuming they are from the scan and not part of the original. What is really amazing technically is the smooth yet narrow range of blues that you have here even in this digital version. I think the composition is what it should be although a slightly lower framing would have worked well too. The level of detail is just perfect to make this an eye-soother.

The monotones in this image really give it a nice impact and I like the fact that the boat gives scale to the mountains of the island.
A unique, punchy shot!

Hi Becky, very strong image, mainly because of the simplicity of the scene, greatly induced by the distance cue. Great shot, and a very familiar sounding experience reading your narrative... Well captured. The tranquil, rather cold atmosphere is very appealing.

Cheers,

Hugo

Hi Becky, this is a beautiful shot, and very successful concept and composition. I like the subtle shades of blue, which unify layer by layer water, land and sky and combine those elements into a citation of the universe, beautiful and calm and vast and evasive to our understanding. And then, in it, the little boat symbol of our existence. Lost in this universe but otherwise also so real and concrete as our everyday life experience in that little part of the world which we create by our daily struggle. Very inciting picture. Well done! Regards Jorg

Quite a splendid shot, Becky!
I love the subtle shading of the Island, in contrast to the boat's silhouette.
VERY nice.
