This was taken from my home town of - canny old, Fellin'! Up on the 'bankies' as we call them. With a great view across, Gateshead, Newcastle and over to the Northumberland hills.

Colin. i loved this one .OK the light is not perfect but so what.I found this so enjotable trying to pick out the various buildings and land marks.Whenever I see a strong critisism of someones work I tend to go straight to the commentators comment to see how good they are. In this case nuff said the better.Super environmental shot.

I'm glad to see that this fine photo (and Margaret's crit) made it to the front page. Well deserved. And you are obviously having fun as you clamber your way up the learning curve, and that's the most important thing. Giving maximum enjoyment to OTHER people comes along shortly after that...

Thanks for the critical critique, Mirek. I appreciate all comments, as I feel I can learn from them all - good bad or indifferent.
You say the light is 'flat'. But you can clearly see, the oblique and sharp contrast, with the shadows. 'Boring', is a picture of a rusty bucket - not one of a sunlit cityscape, with varied architecture, and a hill range in the far distance.
You are right about the soft focus on the horse. (and overexposure on some buldings) I should have chosen a smaller aperture. I am, after all, an amateur. I didn't modify anything, but just a crop and uploaded it, as it was.
By the way, the horse was just there. A ragman's horse, and tethered with a chain. (Just about visible in the photo).
A snapshot it isn't. As I carefully composed all of the above elements, that make this 'boring'.
You're right about the limitations of the Powershot camera. It only goes down to f8. But has a superb, stabilized, 12x zoom (432mm equivalent.)
Thanks again, Mirek, for going to the trouble of studying it. I appreciate that, and have learned from it!

Thanks for the work yu've put in here, Margaret. I appreciate it a lot! I should have done some PS work, and not submitted the photo just as it was.
In my original, the horse is over-exposed, and not quite in focus. Also, you and Becky are right. I should have used a smaller aperture, (say f8 at 1/125s), instead of 1/500 @f4. Some of the white buldings are also overexposed, in the strong, september, afternoon light.

Treble congratulations Colin, new camers, fantastic composition and front page. I love how all the elements come together so well, and you have retained nice detail in everything. The colours are good althougha s Becky said one stop down might have brought out the colours/toned down the white a bit more, so had a a go, left the foreground, but played around with the view a bit - see if you like. Again really well done, am so behind with viewing and comments but will find time today to see if you have any other uploads with your new camera

I think that lighting in this photo is too flat due to the time this picture was thaken I would say between 10:00am and 3:00 pm. Really boring shot, very static with nothing going on. The horse seems to be totally disattached from the bacground. I kept looking at the picture wondering what is this horse doing there, besides being out of place this horse appears to be out of focus too. It may me due to the limitations of the camera, I am not sure but I think the maximum apperture on Canon Power Shot S-2 is f-8 I would classify it as a snap shot.

It works for me, my friend!
Beautiful animal...reminds me of my bareback-riding childhood, back when I dreamed of having an Arabian stallion and being a jockey, like Willie Shoemaker and Alec Ramsey. I was heart-broken when I realized I was already way over the height limit.

Wow, Colin, this is a splendid picture. I'm so glad you are enjoying your new camera. It was a nice autumn day for it, wasn't it! I have a new one, too, a heavy monster that takes 6 x 6 negatives... but I had fun with it at the recent Sumo wrestling tournament, Unfortunately the viewfinder has to go off for repair, so I'll be without it for a while. Meanwhile I have a new lens for my 35mm SLR. I'll have fun with that instead.

This is a really cool shot . . . I love how there's three elements to the photo: the rural, the urban and the suburban (it's great that the hill slopes away, otherwise the suburban may have remained hidden). I also like how three definitive colours (blue sky, red rooves and green grass) interact to make this unique photo even more bold.
Is the horse tethered? There seems to be a thin rope hanging from its head . . . you could try to clone it out just to remove the (very slight) distraction or make it appear that the horse is roaming free. You may also have been able to get away with irising down one more stop in order to mitigate the sun shining off all the white objects, but overall, I love this intriguing shot. :)
