Hi Antonia, very nice image and it really enhances the size of this ship by using the wide format. I like the treatment of the haze, it too works well. Did you get some good sunset shots?

Hi Hugo, thanks for your thoughtful comment. What was I thinking!? It is a good thing you reminded me about the movement of the boat during sunset cruise...hahahaha. I need to find a way to take pictures of this harbor when the light is right. Many times I traverse the bridges during dusk (there are 4 of them to drive over), and the show of lights, boats and bridges is just spectacular. The Port Authorities don't permit pedestrians up on the bridges, and of course access to the piers and boats is restricted, so the cruise is the first time I've had a chance and the light was awful. I will employ the services of my friend the longshoreman and see if he can help me with access issues and be my tour guide -- and I'll take my tripod!
As for the gradient mask, what you are telling me is that the haze/fog wraps too far forward at the right and left edges....correct? I actually did use a linear gradient, and worked to avoid the look you see -- but from your view I know that I still need to go further. FYI, I was using shorthand for what I actually did. I added a layer of solid white, then I used the linear gradient tool in layer mask to mask out the white, trying different opacities and levels. I actually did struggle a bit with the haze on permimeters, trying to wrap the ship sufficiently without a linear look to the fog. I can push the haze back a bit more at the perimeters, varying it so that it doesn't look manufactured, and that should solve it.

Hi Toni, The white gradient mask does place the center of attention nicely on the freighter. The line the shadow creates on the bow is excellent. I'm always fond of those industrial shots. Good shot, considering the difficult lighting situation, I know those hazy situations all too well, and am always disappointed by the outcome of my shots during those days, but I would've been very happy with this one....:) Returning during sunset? Hmmm. Maybe even more difficult... The harbour lights could be very interesting indeed, but even more difficult to shoot from a moving boat.
As to the white gradient mask, it does look like a circular gradient around the boat. Although this places the center of attention on the freighter nicely, the interference with the water on the left side makes it look a bit unnatural. Have you tried a linear gradient, starting half way the water, running up into the sky, excluding only the turrets of the ship (if that's the right phrasing) Just curious; it would perhaps make the shot less surprising, which might not create the desired effect...

Thanks Carsten...you are right...I unmasked for the water in the foreground and from the front of the ship to the rear, although as it happened, even unmasked the rear quarter of the ship had the haze on its own -- it wouldn't unmask...lol!

Nice work on the haze effect on this shot. The composition and mood are really nice too.
It's amazing how large these boats are. I got to see one very close up a few years ago. My friend got a new Hobie Cat (catamaran 16' I think) I got invited to be in the trapeze of the Cat. We sailed right beside one of these tankers that was docked in Toronto harbour. I'll never forget that feeling. Too bad I couldn't take pictures. I was hangning on for dear life!
