About Deborah Packard - a fine singer of traditional songs of both American and Scottish/Irish tradition. What do you think about the contrast here? Thanks for looking.

Thanks Kim - music performance shots are often hard because of the mics and the wires, but in some way they are also part of letting you know something about the concert.

Again, the expression on the face is that of such raw emotion and feeling that I am drawn into this life, in this backroom of a pub.
I wish that there wasn't that mic stand going across her neck, though... feels a little awkward. Perhaps if you had gotten a little higher and shot down a bit, it would have mingled more with her shirt.
As for the contrast, I think you nailed it. Her forehead is a little hot, but there is still detail there, so it really just makes her face and expression the focal point of the image.

Thanks Thilo! - a little artificial vignetting would frame her well here.

Hi Stefan,

the grainy & soft look and the low-powered contrast gives the image an ancient look. if that was your intention: well done ;-)
I like the passion on her face a lot. gives the image a spirtual look along with the mentioned technical surroundings.
To be honest, I would prefer to have a slightly sharper look and/or a vignetting effect.
anyway, like your work a lot.
take care,
thilo

It is a little dim but about what you'd expect in a pub setting. There were a couple halogen overheads over the performers but they were no better illuminated than the rest of the place really. The negative is not light but not overly thick either.

How dark was the scene? (I don't know much about b&w film, so ignore me if I make no sense) I would have thought that such a slow shutter speed at such a wide aperture would overexpose the image at ISO 3200...

Hello Richard - thank you for your thoughful commentary. I seldom find myself shooting completely wide open with the lens just for the very thin dof it gives at f/2 (not that this is particulary deep), and because focusing is hard enough in low light like this. It is interesting to hear of the subjective aspects of the more expensive siblings to this short telephoto.

I think high contrast is often the price to be paid for available light photograpahy. It contributes to the look, which to my mind is authentic and personal. Equipment-wise the 85/2 was always soft compared to the 85/1.8 or 85/1.4, but this could be an advantage in portraiture. I think the emotion of this session comes through loud and clear.

great shot - having tried this sort of photograph, I appreciate how easy they look and yet how difficult they are to do well

regards, Bill
