About abandoned sulfur mine just outside the northwest corner of death valley. this was shot in auto mode (P) and came out very dark because i forgot to compensate. reworking it was a bit difficult and i was forced to increase saturation in order to get some detail in the crusher without washing out the highlights and losing the yellow sulfur. i'm fairly happy with the result but i just could not get the sky to look right. any advise and/or commentary on how this could be improved is most welcome. btw, what categories does this type of thing really belong in?

Good work, Tom. I've gone all over this area, but this angle escaped me. The contraption is a little dark as you said, but not bad. I would try to selectively dodge just the area by doing a sort of linear lasso select (sorry, I use Photoimpact 7) and dodge just that. As far as category, I would think landscape.

hugo & bobby,

left side is a bit too close, huh? ;^) you know, i shot it with a bit more room to the left of the crusher. when i was getting ready to post this i could hear hugo comment: "it's centered, again!". so i figured i should crop it as tight as possible to offset that effect. you can bever win ;^)

take care,
tom

PS - the tone of this is a bit unusual. you guys know i'm just joshing you right? all in good fun. ;^)

Hi Tom, wonderful details... the colors of the foreground and background are very well balanced.

Think the left side corner is cropped/captured too close/tight...

Good try...

Cheers ! Bobby

Hi Tom, I'm always a fan of old rusty machinery. Excellent piece, too! Very agressive. The low camera position makes the size of this thing come out perfectly. Only the left side seems a bit closely composed.

It would be out of caracter if I didn't play with PS a bit.... ) Some level tweaks, and a bit desaturation (there's a first time for everything;o)

As to the category: I'd place it in "other" or "gruesome rusty things and machines"...;o)

Cheers,

Hugo

Man, this one looks surreal - it almost looks like a scale model, because it's lit so well and the sky is so blue.

Lovely!

lee, LOL ;^) now that you mention it, it does look like a pelican ;^) to be honest, i pre-planned to "cheat" here. i thought it through and decided that i should shoot it by histogram. in other words, adjust your exposure to get a nice histogram. so as to make sure that you're not losing betail or blowing out the highlights. as long as you don't blow the highlights, RAW format allows you to "recover" detail by adjusting the exposure in PS.

the problem is that i can't find the right balance AND produce a nice deep blue sky color. recovering the detail under the crusher is easy enough. but when i do that, the sky turns into an uninteresting light blue color and the sulfur looks like sand.

choices, choices. i shot a few others here that are completely unworkable. at least by me ;^)

take care,
tom

Tom your going to kick me for this but.....this is another pelican.
To get the detail out of the underneath the shaded area, and keep the sky from over exposing is tough.
I like the affect you have here, I wouldn't mind seeing a bit more detail on this side of the pelican..opps I mean rock crusher :)
A good capture though, has much character.
