Lion ants are pretty spectacular as adults and are best photographed early in the morning when they tend to be a little sluggish after the cool of the night. They usually appear here in July but once the sun's up they're very difficult to get close to .The patterning in their wings is particularly beautiful.
Just a tad "hot" (bright) on the stems, particularly the one the antlion is hanging onto. I'm wanting the stem to lead out of the corner just a tetch down from the corner. Other than that, nice colours, nice exposures, good focus on the insect, and you've got the antlion pretty much full frame in the composition. Well done.
(Nan, these are fun insects in the larval stage. They burrow into fine sand, and flip the sand out with their flat heads. This forms a funnel in the sand with slippery slopes, insects fall into the funnel and cannot crawl up the sides. The antlion larvae waits hidden at the bottom of the funnel for unsuspecting prey to fall into the trap, and grabs it and drags it under the sand with its large pincers. Ants are frequently caught in these traps, hence the name ant lion.)
