Kevin, hi!
I agree with the commenters above, that the shot is technically good, but that it maybe lacks a bit of "zip" or "wow", and that a different angle/bit more foliage might give it that zip. The colours are absolutely beautiful though. Are they straight from the camera or are they enhanced in post-processing? And, where in the world does a person find such beautiful caterpillars? I would just LOVE to find some - I don't think I've ever seen one like that. Anyway. Back to work.

Kevin,
The angle here is what doesn?t work, its shot too straight on. Maybe if you were to move to the front or the back, shoot from a lower angle, more from above...etc. The sharpness is good although it could be a bit sharper and the color pops nicely. The lighting also works well here.
Basically change the angle and you have a very nice shot here.

Well, Al and Richard have covered my thoughts (probably alot faster in their heads than in mine! LOL!) but I'll add that maybe a little be more of the foliage, just to give this guy a 'goal' so to speak. I think that might work especially with a headon shot as suggested by Al.
Good job. Keep posting!

This image is a good example of a nature study, exhibiting clarity, detail and good exposure. The darker, contrasting background sets off the subject and the slight amount of vegetation establishes context. The effectiveness is somewhat diminished by the subject's dead-on center placement and the hot spots to the right hand stems, but these are minor quibbles.

Kevin,
The first thing I would do is try envisioning what you want in your mind. You seem to have the exposure compensation fine, but what it does not have is a little snap. I think there were a lot more interesting angles here that you could have explored. Perhaps experiment with a little selective focus and don't stop down so far and it may have been a much more interesting image.
Try shooting it headon and see where the dof falloff takes you.
