I abso-freakin-lutely understand what you're saying!! Well . . . except for the part about how this particular shot isn't AMAZING!! LoL!
Never worry my friend . . . complete honesty is always the best way to go . . . and never needs to be apologized for. I left a comment on today's EC Awarded image that was honest . . . and, frankly, I just don't get it! I DO think I have many better, un-awarded pictures. But a mirror-clear reflection would be just another picture . . . and it needed the disturbance to make it clear it was a reflection. Not for everyone no doubt! The disturbance, by the way, is bubbles of methane gas seeping up from the tar pit.
As to irregularity . . . I'm with you there too . . . I have too many things to do and a publishing deadline as well!
One doesn't improve by surrounding themselves with "yes" men. It may make you feel better and keep at it longer . . . but improvement can only come from -- shall we say -- brutal honesty. I appreciate yours! :)

Thanks Ian! And it's over the bleedin' moon and off to Poppy Planet with ya' because I'd be HAPPY to tell you how I did it!! :)
I use PS 4 Elements but almost any editing program should be workable. Adding only to the canvas size and not the image size and then working on the added blank space is how I did this generally. First increase the canvas size a simple 2-4mm black border extension to constrain the image nicely. In this case I think I used a 2mm. After that, a drop shadow around the image to lift it off the BG of UF. Keep in mind that the UF BG is an off-white (R-G-B = 243,243,243 or f3f3f3 depending on the format you're familiar with)
Then the distance to the outside frame would depend on your personal preference. Increase the canvas size to add that space. The gold border is added with a drop shadow on the inside . . . and initially is solid black. After having added the solid black and the interior drop shadow I then select contiguous on the selection tool and highlight the black outer frame . . . replacing it with a gold speckled texture. Once more I add a Black border by canvas expansion without a gap onto the frame and use the interior drop shadow and then flatten the layers.

Thank you Sheila! Believe me I was shocked too! I thought I'd get about 70% complaints on the frame (which I purposely left seperate and OFF the capture) and look what happens! Marlyce had tried this image several times for this project but (in my defense) I gave her good advice -(http://www.usefilm.com/image/1140878.html) and she ignored it. A month later . . . I'm cleaning out my old shots and . . . Viola! :)

Wow . . . thanks Lily. Very few here would ever appreciate this type of frame but that doesn't make it wrong. I liked it so we at least have each other for company!! :) Mostly, I think the frame issues are valid . . . not really a good idea to draw attention AWAY from the image (unless it's a yucky image) . . . but on these last two I thought it did help. Thank you so much for your honest comments and the complement. I KNEW before uploading the last two images there would be more than a few who objected to the frames. This one I put on anyway just because I liked it and thought it would enhance the painted feel of the image . . . almost like a watercolor. Luckily . . . the image seems to be good even with the distraction of the frame (as you candidly and kindly point out! :)
