About Here I changed the shutter speed to 2 Seconds to (Hopefully) freeze the last crew member. He showed up only to help cast off and did not go with them, hence the truck unparked at the dock. Meantime, even the faster shutter speed did not stop more blur on the ship as it began to pull away!
Preparing to cast off and go nightfishing . . . I asked the skipper if I could shoot a few shots. For the blurry project image; it was my intention to combine crisp and blurred and decided a slow speed shot of the ship would have the added advatage of glowing light and the motion of the Ocean would blur the ship . . . the motion of the people would blur them and suggest the work being done . . . but the clarity of the nets and dock would make it clear this was a focused and thought out composition. Combining blur with sharp focus eliminates the possibility that this was simply a blurry shot and made a suggestion that the ship was alive with activity. I was pleased with the results.
This is not a CC image . . . so please feel free to comment by answering ANY of the questions . . . you need not answer all. If you feel compelled to avoid answering any questions, a simple "I like it" or "Eeeeeeew!" will be graciously accepted too!
Question one . . . do you get the feel work is happening?
Question two . . . is this too blurry to convey the feeling of a commercial fishing vessel?
Question three . . . can it be improved (like, by cloning out the flares . . . give specific advice only as to THIS shot)?
Thanks so much for any and all comments and especially for any answers to the specific questions!
Actual aperture is f/22 at 22mm

Thanks Sheila . . . that's something I forgot to ask initially that somebody brought up earlier in the thread. I'll add it to the 'about' section.

Hmmmmm...... I'm not sure. They almost look kind of cool because of the colors. They didn't really bother me before, but now that you asked and I'm looking at the flare, it does seem a tad distracting. I'm going to vote to clone it out.

Thanks Sheila . . . That's it exactly . . . your thoughts on the lens flares?? Clone them out or leave them? Just curious.

Very cool. I like that you captured the crew member watching the boat leave.

1. I get the feeling that the boat is leaving to head out to sea.

2. I really like this image of the vessel. I can tell that it is a fishing vessel even with it blurred and I like that there is more of the boat in this shot.

3. I kind of like the truck in this shot, especially with the door left open. I think the truck works here. With the worker in focus seeming to watch the boat pull away, it looks obvious that it's his truck waiting for him to jump in and pull out.

Good job Doyle!

That`s true, Doyle.
I like too much the saturated colors of the universe.
Best regards and happy week end.

Thanks Nessa! As it happens this is a fellow crew member who merely came by to chat and help them cast off as it was his day off and he wasn't going with them . . . but working at midnight . . . there's not a lot of friends to be out visiting while you're awake and NOT working! The truck is his and isn't parked properly as he is leaving.

I don,t know if it can be improved doyle ..this is my fav of the three.love the clarity of the forefront while the fisherman setting sail are blurred and showing that there is movement ..like the fact that the car door has been left open by someone in a hurry ..is the guy calling for them to wait ..he,s late and does,nt want to be left behind..like it a lot ..nessa

PS.....I think Saeed's 'won techniques' is a transposed ''OWN' techniques':):):) Cheers Doyle

A much improved version over the last post my friend. The foreground details and quayside worker are much improved and the movement in the boat is identified or am I basing that on the fact that I know a boat is there? I love the colour tones and still absolutely love this great innovative idea. You have shown more foreground in this post which is good (improved atmosphere) but in so doing have included unwanted flare which, as aLi suggested, could perhaps have been cloned out. Keep them coming my friend, I think you are on a roll with the blurries. Very best wishes....Ray

Cast off refers to the untying of the boat from the moors . . . and that's not garbage . . . it's nets and other fishing tools. The man casts off the ship but does not accompany it. Thanks Fatemeh.

Wow, Doyle, what a great effect you have created, here! Amazing colours and lighting - the motion of the boat - well captured!

A great result!

I really like this shot Doyle.. a great combination of crisp and blurred as you've said yourself .. I think sharp nets in the foreground along with the blurry ship really give me the feeling that work is being done.. Well I can't think of any specific improvements now.. I like the exposure of the shot very much but maybe burning the fore ground would improve the shot as it's too bright.. mm one other thing .. I think the flare on the nets is a bit distracting and I would have cloned it off if I were you.. but I honestly think that it's great as it is.. Well done..

My very best wishes,
aLi

Thanks Saeed
. . . for the comments. I appreciate your attempt to help very much. I see, often, comments about curves and other PS techniques which I know little or nothing about. I suspect all of them are not available on Elements 4 but do (now) know the histogram and light levels. I read recently a long article by Michael Kanemoto about the graduated Mask in PS only to discover it is not available in Elements.

From your comment (again) which I appreciate very much . . . I am seeing you feel this can be improved in your opinion. I am not familiar with the "won techniques" you mention. Thank you very much for taking the time to make the comments you made . . . I will look into them in more depth.

I really like the colours and lighting of these. The nets etc. really make it look like work. And the blurriness gives impression of busy work. I like the central figure in this one.

It is hard to comment if this can be improved, if I say yes that is my opinion on the way I use my won techniques, which defers from others, but if less exposure time used can prevent the over exposure on some places.
Normally I used under exposure then work on it within the editing tools : curves or level of PS ,or use histogram between pure white and one stop less after the first shot and then based on the result it can be adjusted.
