About The weather has been very intense, but bearable enough yesterday to allow for this shot. Not extraordinary, I think, but pretty enough, and a good change of pace.

Well it is extraordinary, George. The soft colors and sharp detail are wonderful and the comoposition is perfect. What more could you want? Print it and hang it on the wall. Best wishes and thanks for your generous comments. Larry

Hello, Tarek--I'll be happy to give some advice on the dof. There are three controlling factors: lens length, distance from the subject and aperture. Does your camera have a "Macro" mode? If so, that might be one easy answer. Otherwise, to get the most shallow depth, use a long focal length, get as close as you can focus, and use the widest aperture. I don't know how close your Powershot S1 IS will focus at its maximum extension, and so you will have to experiment. Use aperture priority set to about f/5.6 and focus as carefully as you can. You will have to experiment with different apertures, focal lengths and distances to get the results you want because every camera model has different characteristics. If you can focus really close, then smaller apertures will be necessary.

Look at http://www.usefilm.com/image/808227.html
The dof is extremely shallow because the lens at the equivalent of 80mm focuses within a few inches of the subject.

In http://www.usefilm.com/image/801966.html the lens is much longer (equiv. 220mm) and so f/11?a pretty small aperture?was needed to give the dof of only an inch or so.

Experiment a bit. Use a tripod if you have one, or something to steady the camera when you shoot. You?ll soon see how it all works.

I hope this helps. Keep me posted on your progress.

Best wishes --George
