I find black and white a challenge, too. I agree with Suz...it might be a little bit too bright, but not much. I think if you had put a small black frame around this the brightness would be less of an issue. Just me :)
Looks like she definitely likes her "Aunt Sarah!"

Nice portrait Sarah. What a mug!
I think I would adjust the shadows/highlights a bit to soften the light on her face. Then apply a little more midtones to the B/W. Overall the B/W looks good though. Looks like the focus was more toward her mouth than eyes. I bet she has really sparkly ones! Great crop!!!
