About Infra-red image of the land around Death Valley National Park. Shot with a deep red ir filter. In 8 seconds of exposure, the wind tends to move the plants. I love this valley. They found gold here 100 years ago.

Great title, fits well with the soothing softness of your hills and blurry plants. The 8 seconds and infra red really paying of here.

With wind blurring the nearer grasses I would have been tempted to go for a panorama crop, with more weight on that vast sky. But then I would, wouldn't I!

Great explanation! Thanks, John. I'll try this someday with my 10d. I shot some images with it using an IR filter awhile back, but they were so awful I deleted them. Part of the problem was that it was handheld and not exposed long enough.

Thanks again for the quick description of your technique!

Well Mary Sue,the Leica folks don't make it easy. First off there is an optical filter inside the camera and over the sensor chip to specifically remove IR from getting to the chip. Thats done to improve normal image quality. That being said, it does let some IR through. So you slap on an IR filter to the front of the camera and and what you get is a bit of red and mostly ir. You shoot in raw, f4-5 at 8 seconds in full daylight. The resulting imate is shown below. You desaturate to B&W and the repair the exposure/contrast. That's all there is to it!

This view really captures the sense of endless space that I get when visiting Death Valley. The slight blur in the plants adds to the feeling because it leads the viewer's eye to the distant horizon.

I'm a little confused about the use of IR...absolutely the right choice here, but I am not clear how you used it with color digital. Does the Leica DigiLux have a b/w mode?

Absolutely beautiful. I miss that place.

John:

Very interesting effect...all the elements are there, forground, interesting sky etc. My experience with IR is that it works best when the ratio of clouds over clear sky is relatively small, so that you can get the deep black from the blue sky.
