About Every few years our Willow tree has a major pollarding. It makesit easier to maintain and seems to keep it healthy. However, it does look a bit weird for a few weeks.

Neat picture. It looks like a g Bird like creature pointing the way to something--maybe to better days ahead in its seasonal cycle.

Dave,

Pollarding is a specific form of pruning that only relates to trees and isnormally aimed at redcucing the base area from which the branches sprout.

With willow trees it has been a common activity for hundreds of years to pollard then in order to use the young thin (straight) branches for basket and fence weaving. It also seems to promote better growth and keep the radius of the branches within a managageable area.

Interestingly it is a Canadian web site that seems to have the best explanation of "Pollarding" http://www.bluestem.ca/willows-basketry.htm

Great details in the tree, Neil, and it looks like it's nice afternoon light! I assume pollarding is what we call pruning.

It's murder! Happens in Poland as well - but yes, it does seem to keep them going somehow. This tree appears to be looking away in the direction of his severed right branch...
