About My second Dan inspired splash - white balance is a bit better this time (take a look at my portfolio for my first splash!), and I've swapped the 105mm micro Nikkor for a 50mm to improve the DOF.
The background is an A3 piece of paper that I drew lots of colours circles on (in Word) and printed out. The splash itself is a dried marrowfat pea...

Sally, this is absolutely superb, most dramatic, of course, is the sharpness of the splash, but I also like the tonal range, the DOF, and the background circles. I also like the title. As for your remark on titles, I think this is a double edge device in art, just like any other cultural representation. Good titles can be enlightening or entertaining (one of my favourites is Todd Week's "Train of Thought" http://www.usefilm.com/image/845403.html), bad titles abuse the image quality itself. Titles like "Without Title" or "***" are also expressive, reflect conscious authorial decision. A good reading on artistic titles is Chapter 5 (Interpretation and Identification)in Arthur Danto's The Transfiguration of the Commonplace: A Philosophy of Art (1981). Best regards, Gyorgy

I love these types of photos - not sure why water splashes are so intriguing but they are :) Dan's got some great pics too! Well-done, like the beach ball look with it too.

Hi Ron - thanks for the comment!
To get the focus right, I stuck a ruler in the water where I was going to drop the peas (thing that made the splash!), and focused on it and locked the focus. Then I took the ruler away and dropped the peas. I took loads of shots - I didn't find it easy to control where the splash went - so I've got lots of out-of-focus shots! I think it probably works better if you use flash - but I haven't got the hang of it yet - so I stick to sunny days!
I started using my macro lens - but the DOF was way too small - so I've swapped to a 50mm - much better.

Very nice. Makes me want to go and try it. I just got a new camera.....Digital Rebel XT so I will play around. Your DOF is wonderful , how difficult was it to focus? The drop is very sharp.

Hi Sally. This is really done very nicely. The water in the air looks almost solid - frozen nicely. I also like the background colours. I have also found that the red green and blue combination looks really stunning. Very nice effect - well done.
Bryan
PS thanks for your thoughtful critique on my photo.
