The Rebel is a very capable DSLR, and I used mine to shoot the first Eye on the Ball shot in my portfolio as well as most of the other shots in my portfolio.

Best advice for shooting sports equipment-wise is to get the fastest glass you can afford. If you can get to the sidelines a zoom of 200mm will work fine although a 300mm would be a bit better. Sigma offers some good alternatives to Canon so take a look at them.
