I just want to thank everyone for their kind words and comments. I 'd especially like to thank Matej Maceas for his critique and help with the first post.
Thanks to Sarah for her work on this one also. Sarah, I did try and work with the unsharp mask in Paint Shop. I'm not sure if it is as good as the one in Photo Shop or not. My results were not quite as clean as yours! In the end I decided to leave it a bit soft as the effect of the strong unsharp mask left the image looking too obviously doctored. If I had taken the picture right the first time such work would be totally unnecessary anyway....
The bottom line to this experience is this:
1. The lighting is OK...
2. The composition is good...
3. Technically the picture is not good.
You just can't overcome some things with software (I believe). One of those things is poor focus. This picture is poorly focused. The fact is that the end of the snout is out of focus and the white is blown out also. These two things in my opinion make this shot a near miss. Unfortunately, it just isn't a 'good picture' technically.
This shot needs to be re-done properly. It was one of four rather hastily shot pictures I took as my friends were leaving my home after a visit. Next time I will not be in such a rush and hopefully can make amends!

This is SUCH a beautiful picture of this spectacular dog. Wow, great pose! Recently, someone took one of my pictures and put it through a sharpening plug in for Photoshop. I have used the sharpening tool, but am not very good at it. I bought the plugin and I have found it to be very good. I hope that you don't mind, but I took this picture and ran it through the plugin to sharpen it just a bit. I also used the healing tool to get rid of a couple of minor dust specs. Super job!
