About
The old art of weaving sweetgrass baskets is still practiced in Charleston, SC. In the city market and along Highway 17, workers gather sweetgrass, rushes, and pinestraw to make their wares. The tradition is handed down by mothers and grandmothers to girls of 6-8. Only a few continue the tradition. This is Mazie, one of our favorite artisans, whose little stand is along the roadside in Mount Pleasant. The motto on her blouse proclaims, "God Uses Ordinary People." (See also my image, "Praying Hands.")
I thought the thumbnail looked nice, but I was very moved by the large image -- you convy the essense of this sweet and beautiful woman so well!
Her expression is very serene, and at the same time, give me the feeling that she is about to share a wonderful joke with me. I know that I will come away from meeting this woman feeling much better about myself and about the world.
I like the way you framed her with her raw materials in the foreground and her finished baskets behind her. The cell phone in the basket is a nice touch- we know it's 21st century and not 1974 :-)
Thank you for your kind comments on my "Pour les Oisseaux" photo of Times Square - but thanks most of all for leading me to discover your wonderful portfolio.
VERY nice photograph of this lady weaving baskets. Wonderful detail in this image, nice composition also! She looks very happy doing what she is doing!
