Very good close up this too! I like a lot the macro on details of machines! The shapes of the metals could be really facinate!

The mystery has been solved. There it is, the beautiful and shining interior of your gear box. A splendid and ingenious piece of work, interesting in every little details, You're a lucky guy Hugo. I would have loved to photograph a similar subject myself. Superb light, my friend. The soft focus is beautiful.I think it adds some "feel" to the image that would go lost if the attention would have been attracted by the sharpness of the cold metal details. Your old scanner, in this case, helped you produce a great image. Wonderful work, Hugo Regards - Emgy

Hi Lori, LOL! My scentiments exactly! I would be surprised if you'd feel any other way....;o)
The most interesting thing about commenting on a photo I (or in this case you) can't relate to is that I tend to distance myself from the actual subject, and comment on the general aesthetics of a photo, disregarding the subject. But there need to be something in that photo that is appealing. If I can relate to a specific subject, it is much easier to comment, even if the aesthetical elements are "underexposed"....
Thanks for your comment, it tells me alot!
Cheers,
Hugo

Hi Hugo, I read your comments about your scanner. Too bad the scanner is getting old. I would like to see this one a bit sharper (ok, I know is not your fault). Glad to ear you aren't a PS addict! Cheers

Everything fits... Not only mechanically ;-) but also in photography... It has dynamics and I like the "monotony" of the colors contrasting with the energy and movement of the subject... The slightly out of focus option fits well too, adding an extra sense of motion... Resuming... an excelent photo dear Hugo!

Hi Hugo,
Thanks for your comments! Regarding Iran, I go there usually once a year! I am planning a trip in September hopefully.
My picture of the Moor was taken with Jan. I joined him that day on his adventure.
I really like your close-up shot of the gearbox. The shadows work great! Great work.
Take care
Kam

Hi Bobby, Thanks for your comment. As to the softness, this series was shot using natural light, which was quite soft already, but the majority of the sharpness was lost during the scanning.... (My scanner is getting too old for this....;o)
Cheers,
Hugo

Dear Hugo, interesting shot of the gearbox my friend! I helped build and drove many racecars over the years, so this type of thing is right down my alley! sorry I thought you lived in Iran, it would seem that im getting dumber by the minute... at any rate, very nice photography!....jon

wow! they get better and better! i like the minor change in perspective from the first one. this one tells me a lot more. looks like it is a partially assembled box, no? in mid gear change no less. great idea! can't wait to see the third one. this does look more familiar btw ;^)
this one is a bit sharper than the first as you noted in your comment. however, in this series i think the "softness" is not only appropriate but it enhances the story behind the photo for me. if the gears were shiny and spot-on focused it would look a bit too clinical. verena can smell the oil, i can feel it. to me, these have the feel of being shot during a le mans gone by, in the garage, around 2am, mid-race. excellent photo!
off-subject: i think you should write that article. let me know if you need help. i've heard i'm a pretty good editor ;^)
take care, tom

Hi Richard, thanks again for your comment. I use a relative old flatbed scanner, and I scan from print. I've tried scanning straight from negative, but the adapter is worthless. Besides, the lamp of my scannier is quite old, and the output is deteriorating rapidly. (that is one of the reasons my photos might appear too soft, you'll have to take my word for it that the original negative / print is razor sharp.)
In some cases, I do tweak the image in PS, but on my photos, I rarely use anything else than level adjustments, saturation tweaks and the occasional unsharpen mask. If needed, I clone out some dust specks and / or scratches, and I try to match the original print as closely as possible (so no serious editing involved)
Cheers,
Hugo

Well, I got my sharpness, and it's only #2, so I didn't have to wait until #3. (What do you use to digitize your film?)

Hi Hugo,
this one is 'emotional' to me, my family business is production of bolts, nuts, and a lot of other things for automotive industry...
I can smell the oil inside the pic! What size is the gearwheel?
Cheers, Verena

Hi Stephen, Thanks for your comment. The soft focus was partially induced by the natural lighting, but also a consequence of my scanner, which is getting a bit old and worn-out... The original negative / print is razor sharp.
Cheers,
Hugo

Groet Teunis
