Alan, your perspective here is tremendous! You have captured the beauty of the countryside, and kept us on our toes with the dramatic angular composition! Wonderful. ...Brad

Hello again Alan,
First of all, it's refreshing to find someone who approaches this whole comment/critique thing in the way that you do. I, too, am just a beginner at this wonderful hobby and I really appreciate it when someone takes the trouble to write a little more than "great shot".
Secondly, I wasn't referring to you in particular when I made the comments about collecting 'karma', etc. Maybe I'm just a bit cynical, but it seems to me that all of us can fall into the trap of leaving lots of nice comments purely because we hope to get lots of nice comments back.
Thirdly, I'm sorry if I jumped to the wrong conclusion about the wand, it's just that I've used that method on some of my pics, (in order to darken the sky a little), and have been left with a very similar looking pale line that's due to the small amount of feathering I've used on my selection.
Fourthly, (and lastly!), I DO hope I don't sound as though I think I 'know it all', because I have SO much to learn!! That's why I subscribe to this great site and appreciate the opportunity it presents for helpful discussions such as this. I shall continue to monitor your portfolio with interest, and comment as and when I'm able.
My best regards, Chris

Chris,
Thank you for your comments, as a new photographer it really helps when someone
critiques my pictures. First I don't know if you were refering to me, but as a new photographer I only comment on the pictures I like, I,m not comfortable critiquing others work. With more experience that will change. As for the magic
wand, no I just adjusted color, saturation, and
did a USM. I did crop this picture about 50% though, so i don't know why the white line happened. I thank you very much though for you comments and critique.
Thanks Alan

Hi Alan,
First of all, thank you for your kind comments on some of my recent uploads. Now for the difficult bit?
I've grown to really enjoy this site, ('obsession' is the word my wife uses!!), but one of the things that I don't find so appealing is the way that people say nice things for the sake of racking up karma and currying favour with other people who may then say nice things about their pictures! What kind of a way is that to learn anything?!
Heartened by your bio, I thought I'd try and make a more honest and constructive critique on this picture ~ I hope you don't mind and that you will take in the spirit of friendship in which it is offered.
First, the good stuff?
I agree about the birds ~ great to see them soaring overhead?
The clarity and detail is excellent! (If it wasn't, with a 10D, I'd be taking it back to the shop I bought it from!!)
Now for the not-so-good stuff?
The white line above the line of trees, coupled with the 'faded' trees to the bottom right suggest that you darkened the sky by selecting it with a magic wand and then applying a small 'feather'.
Is the picture supposed to be of the tree, (because, if it is, it gets a bit lost in the background of the hill and (IMO) would have been better taken from a lower angle; or, is it of the hillside, in which case it would have been better to zoom out, or walk back a bit, so that the tree wasn't so dominant.
Once again, please take this in the kind spirit it's intended. I'm just a beginner, too. Keen to learn and longing for people to offer honest and constructive criticisms that may help me improve my ability.
Best regards, Chris
P.S. I haven't rated this image.

oh and, as far as the saturation advice, i must remember to practice what i preach..:))))..it's so tempting to hit that saturation slider and go weee into fantasy land.(not saying you did that, only that it IS tempting!) kat!

Hi, Alan..i love shooting trees and grass..we have similar kinds of slopes and tree types here in Costa Rica and their shapes and relationships fascinate me 24/7. In this shot, i love the sharp angle of the slope even though the tree is perfectly alinged on the horizontal. Also, the angle of the tree canopy mirrors the angle of the hillside. Good eye to see that. It's a wonderful composition. The dappling of flowers to the right of the trunk further balances the composition. And the birds of course are the cherry on the sundae.

It is very difficult to shoot this subject well. Do you meter for the sky or the ground?? Oh, what to do, what do do. Invariably either the sky is too bright or the ground is too dark. i think in this case your ground took the hit. But that's ok--there is a clever PS trick i was taught by a landscape photographer here. If you write me at kathf@racsa.co.cr i will share it with you. It allows you to select only the bright areas or only the dark areas of the image so you can adjust each area separately. i think this image would really benefit from a little more brightness in that beautiful tangle of branches. There's a halo along the tree line against the sky (maybe a little too much sharpening?) i would urge a slightly lighter hand in the saturating of these scenes. There's a tendency now that we have PS to just go electric but i think subtlety in landscapes is a lovely tribute to mother nature who gave us this beauty to begin with. Best regards from Costa Rica: kat~
