About The scene today at Harit el Sallheya in the Cairo Souk is somewhat different from what you see here. I wondered how different it would have looked 50 years ago and whether the elements of that time still existed. I took three images all shot within 30 min and put them together, removing most traces of the more recent Western clothing and some modern apartments. I then added a duotoned layer and merged screen to acheive what some of my early Kodachrome 25 prints now look like. What do you think?

Now that we've met, allow me to switch to first names. I am Rafi, and to you I'll refer as Ken.
Your combination of three photos i your "At the Souk" is an outstanding success. There is nothing in the photo to indicate that it is not one.
I don't think it would have looked much different 50 years ago, nor would it look much diffferent in any other oriental souk. I had the opportunity to take a whole film in Teheran in 1966, when Israelis were still friends of Iran. It looked just like your photo but when I reached my hotel I dicovered to my dismay that the film had not turned in the camera. All this happened on my way to northeren Iraq, where we were helping the Kurds in their fight for independece.
About that, I'll tell you more on another occasion, but Ill attach a photo of myself in a tent in Kurdistan reading between patients at the light of a kerosine lamp.
Regards,
Rafi

Although I think there is too much light here, it is a fantastic shot, and it depicts a different world.

Human skull! Now that one passed me by. Not by intention, but interesting things do appear without planning them. Thanks for the comment and observation. Mister Ken

Hi Lex. Wanted to thank you for your comment on At the Souk. Items of current origin include the sunglasses, which you spotted; the plastic bag elegantly perched upon the woman's head; the electric panel and cable; and, though it may not show up well in my aged version, some colorful containers mass produced somewhere other than here. Regards, Mister Ken

wow, Ken..i stopped by your "Unrestored" image and thought i'd check out your latest..glad i did! First i would never, ever have guessed at all the PS work here, and that's a huge compliment to you. i can't even imagine how you combined 3 images. And even so, even apart for the A+ i give you for the intensive work, because as you know also, the amount of PS work does not necessarily translate into a great image, but this image actually IS great! i love the depth, the way the road seems to wind endelssly into the background, full of people and hubub, light and chatter...the foreground is timeless with the clothes, the wares, the dusty feeling...i love the composition and the light..i get this feeling of pure sun, bleached and dry, but not hot..toning is superb and as already mentioned the bits of soft color here and there are wonderful. Congratulations on such a successfully wrought image, Ken!

Thank you for the comments. The remaining items of the Western world left include (as best I can tell after spending way too many hours on this) are the box on the wall with the electric cables; the wild sunglasses (NOT Photoshopped) that you will see twice (Photoshopped); and an elegantly balanced plastic garbage bag. Ken, you did an excellent job! It definitely has the feel of an old Kodachrome. I especially like the subtle hues that are sprinkled throughout the shot. Bravo! ...Brad

Excellent work! It really looks like a nostalgic image. Great PS work! I never would have guessed it's 3 images combined into one.

First i want to say thank you for you're comment on my last photo, the sunken boat. I think u did a great job here, pretty original, taking 3 photo's in 30 min. and combine them. The only western, not old thing, i can find are all the modern sunglasses :-). First i thought it was just one picture, then i read what u say and i say these where 3 combined pictures, great cut and paste work. Wonderfull picture.

Except for the electric cables, you achive your goal in perfection...not only going back 50 years...maybe a a couples of hundresd years. Great work!
