About PS photo processed to grayscale -> quadratone
Layer mask added and solarized, inverted, merged difference to bring sky values from zone 5 to zone 3+. I am just now experimenting with PS "duotones" (as contrasted with the wet darkroom duotone procedures of my youth) and constructive comments much appreciated. thank you.

Hi Thilo. You were not the only one to suggest I remove the traffic signs and other distracting elements. I did post other versions in which I had used Photoshop to remove the signs and cars and I'm not sure what happened to them so I'll dig around in my archives and repost. Regards, Mister Ken

Hi Ken,

very cool & creative rework. it really gets an ancient look. but honestly, the traffic signs and the cars destroy this image a tad... I would crop them away and just show the castle. You may thereby increase the ancient subject. just an idea ;-)
take care,
thilo

Ken, I love the color of this shot. It offers the right "mood". Too bad about the vehicles and poles in the foreground.

wow i like the dramatic effect on that picture. Although it would have been nicer if all the modern items on the bottom were left out.

Thanks for your comments. I used PS and its "Lightning Effects" (5 lights I think) to make those curves to my shot. I have used the same method in some other shots here.

Very beautiful toning, I like the warm tones. I would have tried to leave out of the picture all the modern items... Traffic signs, cars etc., but probably it would have been difficult. Nice work.

I belive that is a remarkable work in ps but in my opinion you could adjust the composizion infact the bottom could be cropped.

Hi, Ken! You've created a moody, very attention grabbing image with your castle. i didn't like the car, the truck or the horses..your latest version is close to perfect. i love the sky and the golden tones suit this old castle. i love duo, tri and quadtones. i love the channel mixer and also gradient mapping. It's all fun, it all has its place. i don't think there's any right or wrong way. It just depends on your image and the effect you are looking for. The only thing i personally would do to this image to finish it is crop closer to the castle on the right and i would (we're talking personally here, ok?) clone out just about everything that smacks of modern day. This includes light posts and that horizontal ribbed thing in the front. i say this because you have created a dungeon and dragon mood. The modern day stuff drags me back into reality and i don't wanna come back! Take care, Ken! And Happy Holidays! kat~

Hmmm - car out, truck out, Rebel and clone now in another pasture. Well, after all the remodeling Conwy has undergone in 8 centuries, a few more in PS won't hurt. I have been learning new things in digital darkroom dijemry from and in response to everyone's input, so thank you all. PSd version with no car, truck, or horse attached.

Effects work well on this composition. The sky has certainly benefitted from your manipulation-- nice image!! Removal of autos was good, but the horses are a bit disconcerting- they look as though they're against a bluescreen.

hmmm... places and idea with sepia is wonderfull, but... i don't like these horses - its look too much artificial.

Sorry, Ken, I overlooked the improved version. Now I can compare it with the original cropped upload too. I'd say that the image with cloned cars/signs looks much better. Not sure about both horses, at least that white one looks fine, I mean lighting is fine. Finally, I like your toned versions better than the original (color).

Thanks for commenting on my images.

Well, perhaps its time to post the original that begat this duotoned bit of dijemry. I tried a tighter cropping to remove the car and truck (as opposed to the cloning used in version 2 in the comments above), but that destroyed the balance at the bottom edge. An exposure just prior to this one was taken at a slightly different angle and required adjustment for a strong trapezoidal perspective, but there were no cars or trucks. David, I tried the multichannel mixer, but was not satisfied with the results. I do appreciate the advice, however, and will try further experiments with this PS tool.

First of all I'd agree with Anouschka and Katrin about the truck and car. Basically, I'd suggest to clone out a)truck; b)traffic light and signs; c)car moving on the road. This may strengthen nostalgic look.

I'm not so strong photoshopper and has *discovered* Channel Mixer just recently. David's suggestions seems make sense. My feeling is that I would prefer a little bit more contrast.

The castle looks really impressive, nice texture. The clouds are great. The sepia-like toning adds nicely to old look.

Very beautiful image with wonderful toning and contrast between the very old castle and the modern car driving by. Very beautiful details and lovely light and sky. Very good work Ken, but I am not so sure about the truck just visible and driving out of the frame on the left side....Best regards Harry

david malcolmson   {K:4145} 12/21/2003
I find the overall effect of this rather oppressive. The heavy toning contributes to this, but so also does the viewpoint you have chose here. The castle should dominate the scene by means of the way it stands out from the surrounding environment rather than by merely taking up the most space in the frame. Through lack of this context the castle just looks lumpish and four-square. You have gone to extraordinary trouble to get the toned effect here but you could have saved yourelf a lot of time if you had used the Channel Mixer instead. I feel that the toning you have contrived here leads to an unbalancing of the tonal range of the image as a whole. For instance the shadow areas of the castle lack sufficient depth - they look muddy, and the sky is too dark. There's a fine image waiting to emerge from this if you do something about the balance of tones. Sometimes less really is more.

That is so much better Ken. Lovely horse, it's a shame you had to lose him. Horses are such great companions!

Thank you for all the encouraging comments. For Richard, Katrin, and Anoushka I removed the truck and car. The horse grazing in the meadow is Rebel, my horse until last year when, at the age of 31 years, he succombed a severe case of colic. Thank you for the suggestion, Katrin.

This is such a beautiful building, I've been there once ages ago. I like the composition and toning in this image. It's a shame about the car and truck, the nostalgic look would be complete without them :-)

It's nice! You sould clone this car away and find some horse!:)

The effect of the castle against the sky is superb. Like the control of tonal range in both areas.
Pity about the truck...
