Absolutely lovely. I noticed that the expression was sad, and saw the welling tear without needing to have it pointed out.. but did not notice the gender (and wouldn't have)..
The photo is lovely. It captures the moment and the emotion brilliantly..

A portrait with a strong strength telling.
One good way to make portrait: the essential moment that confer character.
