Matej,
Thanks for your comment. I like this image because it shows the bug "in action" in it's normal life, taking pollen from the flower. The eye is more noticeable in the print perhaps and the shadow areas more clear.
I think the reason the background isn't so black is that there were (I guess) bright sunlit leaves very close behind the subject. The other shots I think had far more space behind the subject, so registered nothing lightwise.

I have trouble locating the fly's "face". The details of the wings and the hair on the back are nicely visible, but the area I would naturally want to focus on is lost in shadows (and my monitor is pretty bright as far as I know). If I had to choose which of the three shots you have uploaded so far is the weakest (a very relative term), it'd probably have to be this one.

The background in this photo isn't so black - were there any changes in the setup?
