i played around with cropping the guy out , but it kind of seemed to upset the balance a bit as it would mean chopping the edge of the bench off.

So.. i found your portfolio. A lot of intersting pictures here. I stopped at this one for now.. it's really good. I would have cropped out the person at the left, but besides that - this picture says a lot....

Nathan, I know you took this from the best of motives - compassion, possibly anger - but pctures of the destitute are among the hardest to take. In the first place, there's the question of intrusion - they have no privacy, no home, no secret personal space, their entire lives are in public, so how do we justify photographing their misery?
Then there are simple artistic matters. I see the destitute man, but I also see a lot of middle class people around, going about their business. The way you've framed this photo, it seems you sort of wished they weren't there - the man on left has his nose cut off, the people in the b/g are blurry (but are still heads, and therefore attract my attention). The real photo is not just this man, but his relationship to society, represented by these people - they have to be more included, along, of course, with that empty bench-space.
And then there's a few other matters, like the lack of contrast overall and the overblown areas which are too white and distract attention.
The good point here is indeed the man's foot.
As for how to do this genre of photogrpahy, yes, it is normally done in b+w, but not always. The masn's foot needed colour. Beyond that. you need to establish rapport with the people you photogrpah. Get to know them before you start taking their pictures. If you don't do that, you'll always be on the outside, looking at them through plate glass, as if they were exhibitions in a museum. To show them as people, you need to know them as people.

yep i amy well try it in BW i was origianlly thinking of takign shot in BW, but thought colour may have more of impact with his foot as it is. I hope to good back to Montevideo soon and now i can actually speak spanish , fidn a little bit about this guy, why hes here , what happened to him. I have been speaking to a few people living on the streets here , and they ahve soem intersting(and sad) stories. really interested in soem sort of social photo journalism if anyones is in taht field woudl welcome advice!
