Dedem. haftaya 85 yaşını dolduracak. Eskiden bizi güldürür eğlendirir, bazen de kızar bağırırdı. Şimdi pek konuşmuyor, pek hareket etmiyor, evden dışarı hiç çıkmıyor. pencerenin önünde bulmaca çözer hep. güzel elleriyle alnını kaşırken bir resmini çekmeye çalıştım ama kaçırdım, o da beni fark etti, kaçırdım diyince "böyle miydi?" dedi bana :) Bir gün usefilm'e dedemin annemin bebekliğinde çektiği nefis fotoğrafları da koymak istiyorum.
my grandfather, born in 1924. He has always been someone I liked spending time with, although in the past he could be a figure or authority and fear as well, from time to time.
Nowadays he tries his best not to leave his chair by the window where he does crossword puzzles all day. I took a few photos of him on the day I took this one, he didn't notice.. I always admire his hands. He happened to scratch his head and I tried to catch that but I couldn't, he just noticed me, got surprised and laughed. When I told him I just missed a pose, he said "was it like this?"
Too bad that the prints are so expensive where you live, Zeyneb, but the images on CDs will do very well too. Still, you receive the developed film, don't you? or do they give you only the CDs?
BTW, scanning is usual step when working with film, not with digital equipment.
Anyway, here the problem is obvious. The original lacked sharpness and it is overexposed too. Actually increasing contrasts will (sometimes) pretend to introduce a "better sharpness" and better exposure balance, but that´s all. It´s pretending which also introduces the usual witnesses of a bad shot: Pixelation after tryinf to "salvage" it. Don't salavage such images at all. Throw them away and try again. And if you can't try again then the only right photographical consequence is... that there is no way to bring back a lost chance. Actually the original of this shot is really unusable, Zeyneb. Wish you a second chance with a good solid light measurement, a wide aperture in case of low light conditions, and a tripod.
Here I add the original of the photo, it in fact had softer colors as you suggested. I now get to understand that the "patterned" look of many of the photos I upload here are because I play with their lights in microsoft picture manager. I dont like doing heavy postwork but I have a tendency of increasing contrasts-- I recently started to understand that it contrasts doesn't go well with every photo :P
to your question, it is not a scanning of a printed photo. I still use film, I get it developed and then put directly into cds, without getting the prints out (because its too expensive). although I try to work with photography stores which are good and cheap at the same time, I usually dont feel happy with the results, the photos have scratches and spots and often the colorings come out incorrect (when they use in sufficient developers or overdue ones). then I open up the digital programs and often end up with artificial looking results. I will take this comment of yours as a warning to be more careful in that,
The image has many strenghts as a portrait and also as a "snapshot", Zeyneb. Surely a very original shot of a face, whic in some ways reminds me of journalism and of documentary work. Much like a professor in some good interview, elaborating on thoughts, ideas, theories, and views. The timing seems to have been perfect for that, despite the small reflections that cover his right eye. The coloring is again unusualy "hard" and strong for a portrait, and this fits well the already mentioned work of a photographer in joirnalistic fields, when there is not as much time to really adjust everything perfectly.
There are some problems too. You got the effects of hard pixelation here and there, and it seems that this was the result of the typical way that JPEG compresses the image, or perhaps scanning problems. These artefacts are visible as "hardness" for example in transitions of light/hue, or as "patterns" in other places. Look for example at his right ear. It is not only out of focus but also exhibits a "pattern-like" behavior. BTW, was that scanned from a print at a relatively big magnification?
Anyway, another problem is the too quickly diminishing sharpness toward the contours of the face. A bit more DoF (narrower aperture) might help make it better.
