About On July 4, 1986 -- during Fleet Week-- First Lady Nancy Reagan rededicated the Statue of Liberty after its restoration (far left).

Seen from Staten Island, rising over the ships, the Towers were taken for granted at that time.

Too bad they cannot be restored.

Great shot Leora, of magnificent city. Unfortunately, I never saw the Towers in person. My first, and for now only, visit to NYC was in 2007. On that place will raise a new building(s) as a symbol of peace and freedom to future generations. I hope they will be more clever then us...
Best wishes,
Zeljko

Thank you for your generous comment, Iman. I am very nostalgic about the past when life was simpler. I am starting to understand politics and the devastating effect it can have on people's lives.

Be safe and well, Leora

Thank you for your nice and beautiful comment, Hussam. I say, "If only things could have been different, all would still be nice."

I appreciate your decorative talents and your photography.

Thank you so much, Zeev. Wishful thinking, but I like to remember it like this.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment, reza. For the survivors it has not been easy, many have respiratory problems. But thanks to Robert de Niro much of the adjacent area has been revived. He is known for his film studio and yearly festival. Local restaurants have come back to life. But the towers will not return in the same form.

There has been a competition for the prize of rebuilding and not everyone is happy with the design. They must honor the dead somehow, too, and there are disagreements about how that should be done. I think one plan is to make reflective pools where the buildings used to stand and build around those.

I used to go there a lot and photograph from the top. I have not been back there. It was too painful for me to return to the disaster scene, so I prefer to remember it as it was before and create an imaginary bubble to protect it.

I am glad you like my personal view.

Thanks, Nessa. I can't help thinking that a lot of mistakes were made leading up to 9/11 and even and more in the name of 9/11, so I like to go back to the simple priorities right under our noses. I am very glad you like it.

Thank you, Arif. I am glad you like it. And I agree with you. But there are fanatics that believe that it has to get worse before it gets better. Best regards...

Thanks, Sunset Man, or Doug from Hawaii. I could not resist turning back the clock.

I don't know why it came out so small on the screen. I had to click on panoramic view to even see the Statue of Liberty.

I am glad you like it. Your sunsets are remarkable and so classic.

I believe a decision has been made, but I don't know if any tenants have signed up. People may not remember that it took a while to fill the original towers and a lot of government offices were put in as a result. Who would want to be in such a tall building after this? Without a parachute!

Leora, I saw part of a programme on t.v. that showed the very early stages of rebuilding. After all, I guess that it took a while to decide what to do about the site following those terrible attacks.

Thanks, Roby. It is a fantasy, but sometimes that can help.

You are very optimistic, Len. It is 7 years and we have no replacement. Too many factions - like building the tower of Babel.

Thanks for your comment and insight.

Interesting post. Maybe in a few years' time you can get a good shot of the replacement buildings to put alongside this little slice of history...

(It's so long since I was in New York City that I have no pictures of the twin towers because they hadn't been built!)

I found this photo in my archives and started cleaning up the sky. It occured to me what was missing - a bubble protecting the Towers.

If not a bubble, then an enlightened government and intelligence force that could pre-empt the destruction of the Towers, or better engineering and design of the Tower's structures, not tied to cost efficiency.

It gives me some comfort to remember the many times we enjoyed the Towers from near and afar, like on this particular 4th of July.
