About This picture is dedicated to my dear friend from Luxembourg Nicole Besch who is used to deal with wild animals like foxes and wolves but did she ever notice giraffes walking through her city ?

I made this shot some weeks ago during a street theatre festival and “fits into” my recent Survival serie or also in my “twin animals” portfolio launched about a month ago.
More pictures were taken that beautiful day but were they all sufficiently “fit” or worth to be shown ? No certainly not.
Many other pictures will remain unnoticed, maybe this one will have a chance to be commented or even appreciated, fit to survive in your memory and further inspire others, and teaching those in particular how not to make a picture :-)

"Survival of the fittest" is a phrase which is shorthand for a concept relating to competition for survival or predominance. Originally applied by Herbert Spencer in his Principles of Biology of 1864, Spencer drew parallels to his ideas of economics with Charles Darwin's theories of evolution by what Darwin termed natural selection.

Although Darwin used the phrase "survival of the fittest" as a synonym for "natural selection", it is a metaphor, not a scientific description. It is not generally used by modern biologists, who use the phrase "natural selection" almost exclusively.

An interpretation of the phrase to mean "only the fittest organisms will prevail" (a view common in social Darwinism) is not consistent with the actual theory of evolution. Any organism which is capable of reproducing itself on an ongoing basis will survive as a species, not just the "fittest" ones. A more accurate characterization of evolution would be "survival of the fit enough", although this is sometimes regarded as a tautology.

Biology teachers are saying just about the same thing today, that the neck of the giraffe grew longer and longer over many generations because to do so was an advantage in obtaining food from the tops of trees. It was an example of "survival of the fittest" and evolution through "natural selection." Everybody would wonder if such were so, why all leaf eating animals didn't have long necks. And, since there are still a lot of herbivores around with short necks, why are there not giraffes with short necks? After all, it is obvious that it is not so much the survival of the fittest as it is the survival of the fit.

Even a lot of unfit creatures manage to struggle along, reproducing their own just in time and in just enough numbers to avoid extinction, but only barely so. Along that line, have you ever seen a giraffe drink from a stream? Talk about leg splits. So ungainly. I'd hardly call that an advantage. It seems to me that it's far more likely that giraffe has to eat leaves from the tops of trees because its neck is so long, rather than its neck grew long just so that it could eat from the tops of trees.

You are welcome dear Luca,
I like both civilised and "wild"life, sometimes you have to find out what it is by making a picture of it :-)

Hi Nicki, glad that you made it to your favourites. It is maybe also still worth to see your city from another POV e.g. like a giraffe looking at the crowd.
Yes I saw also the dressing of the acrobats before and amazing how two people had to help to get a single acrobat per giraffe ready for a city walk.
gros bisous en bon weekend,
Paul

Hi Michelle, these street acrobats could easily mimic a seagull each but they surprised everybody by choosing and handling a more complicated creature as well.
Glad that you liked viewing,
big hug and kisses,
Paul

Yes indeed a weird street shot dear Arif, we do not see giraffes every day. Some of the last remaining colonies survived on a savanne close to the city of Luxembourg.
Cheers,
Paul

Dear Jen,
it was funny to see these giraffes walking in the street even simulating eating loaves from trees. One acrobat in each giraffe amazing. Indeed not only hot inside but also a tremendous acrobatic effort of the artist inside.
hugs and kisses from Paul

Hi Saikat, thanks for your comment. I uploaded another picture first but I found that it was below required quality and replaced it.

This is such a great dedication to Nicki dear Paul, its wonderful to see how these 'party' animals walk through her streets:))) I wish we had these in the north that would keep me here instead of drifting away again to Africa....
People must have been hot inside, it looks really really funny and great!!

Just to give you an order of scale, a glimpse of the audience and square. My first upload actually, but I didn't like myself by a lack of clarity.
