Well Jen, there was an Englishman who earlier this year rowed across the English channel, cycled across France and Spain and then swam across the Straits to Morocco. Not sure I'd be up to that - he has an olympic gold medal for rowing.
I'm also way behind in commenting, and will only be able to dip in and out for the next week or so. A strong levante is now blowing, which means windsurfing takes priority!

Finally looking at you I see I am farrrr behind again my dear AJ, was thinking you left again for some tough trip in tents or bikes;)) You might have done anyway, we had surfing and cycling, what next? You can always swim up to Marocco, quite an experience, or what about rowing?? Anyway you LadyBug looks almost perfect, except for the subjects Joggie is telling you:))) Maybe a snail is a great thing, like I tried, as it is not as fast as these little beetles:)) For me too fast anyway.....have a great weekend, hugs Jenxx

Many thanks, Joggie. You are not being finicky - this is exactly the sort of comment I am looking for. Though I like this shot, I know there is something about it that is just not quite there, and I think you may have hit on it. Now to put the suggestion into practice next time she shows up - something that will not be easy if she is as active as she was when this one was taken!

Lovely crisp colours and well composed AJ. my main critique would be the plan of focus. I would prefer the focus to be shifted 1-2mm to the front to the wing and eye closest to the camera, letting the rest of the body fall out of focus from the front. That way one dont have to look past the out of focus parts (a large percentage of the body) to the rest of the insect. I know it might sound finicky but it makes a big difference in the first impact. Kind regards. Joggie

Hi John! Yes, of course you are right about the aperture. I was keen to try out this new lens and hadn't got my tripod to hand, and this little lady was in a hurry - hence the settings. But with my wonderful new joystick tripod head, life should become much easier! Thanks for your support - as you know, I do appreciate the constructive critiques.

Well Robin, I kinda focused on the front of the head, cos I assumed that's where the eyes would be if I could see them!
As to the DOF, I think that even at f32 it is still very shallow with this lens in macro mode. I need to experiment a bit more, but I think we're talking millimetres here...

Open the box, Avi, open the box! It's a great lens (apart from the horrible screw in hood, oh, and the strange manual mode switch...) But I think the focus is always going to be a problem with a lens like this in macro mode. But hang in there - I'm after that perfection!

I can't critique, since I have the same lens unopened for about a year now. Just CAN'T get the focus right. So I will play the selfish elf, and wait till you achieve perfection, and THEN, slip you an email ! :)

Cripes, YOU can see a ladybug's eyes? Impressive!
Great dof, I meant between the lady and the background. Question...at f/11 why did the clarity not come through? Is it because you used macro mode? I'm kinda confused...
Robin
ps...your secret is safe with me...got my own spraybottle, eyedropper, etc.

Hey Robin! Good to hear from you and I do appreciate you dishing up the serious stuff. This is what I want - a discussion!
This is a brand new lens and of course in macro mode it has a really shallow DOF. So unless the subject is two-dimensional, it makes it hard to know where to focus (manually, of course!) Go for the eyes? That's the usual suggestion. But then the spots on the back will be soft. So I don't think I really agree with your comment that the DOF is great. Maybe for this composition I should have focused on the spots.
(Oh, and by the way, just between you and me, I did use a spray bottle... It got her a bit agitated - hence, she was moving around and left shortly after this was taken.)
AJ

Serious critiques hmmm? Ok, I'm sure you already know but here goes...focal clarity is lacking a bit AJ. It appears the pof runs diagonally from below the little lady, on the stem, across her backside. Yes? The clarity of the drops on her back half is pretty good, the composition and dof are great! Find her and give it another go...and just in case there is no rain in the forecast, bring a spray bottle. ;)
I know...I haven't commented in ages and here I am dishing out a "serious" critique...what's up with that?
Take care...Robin
