About This is three images stitched together in Sony Picture Gear. I actually took a much wider field of view, but putting all the images together would have resulted in a very shallow image height. As it is, the dimensions do not really fit the specifications of the new Panoramic category. However, this seems to be a subject well suited to a panoramic format and I will upload it as a bit of an experiment.

The images were taken on the hillside about 5km east of Tarifa, looking across the Straits to Morocco and the Spanish enclave of Ceuta, clearly visible on the left of the image. The mountain is Jebel Musa, one of the Pillars of Hercules (the other being Jebel Tariq, otherwise known as Gibraltar). The distance across the Straits here is about 14km. This was an unusually calm day during late summer 2005.

I used a tripod to maintain a level viewpoint and to reduce the effect of camera shake at full zoom.

How did you manage this without the clouds? I have only ever once seen Gibraltar without a big cloud sat on it. A very nice shot of the Straits, I know the spot this was taken from very well, as you already know the view from there is amazing.

PS.... As you said, next year we will almost be nieghbours, another northern girl will be heading for the sun and fantastic light.:)

Many thanks for your comment, Ursula. This was taken looking south from a track leading north, just to the west of the Mirador, which is east of Tarifa!!!

Anyway..it is a gorgeous view and image...the stitch is very good.

Really beautiful shot(s), John, and very nicely put together. This is a breathtaking view, of course, enhanced by the touch of foreground area you've included. Nice work . . .

Best wishes,
--George

A great stitch, John. This looks absolutely perfect.

BTW. Thank you for your very constructive critique on my Grand Canyon stitch, John. It challenged me to try one more time... and I succeeded in fixing the horizon. Take a look at http://www.usefilm.com/image/1016119.html

Thanks for the comment and challenge again,
Jürgen

Isn't it nice to be able to show panoramas in more detail! You might like to try putting your camera in portrait mode to get a deeper image (only, of course, if there is something in the foreground and/or the sky to justify it, of course). You have to do a bit more stitching, of course. This one looks fine as a panorama to me, and a 3:1 or 4:1 aspect ratio is actually much more common than Usefilm's 2:1, which is a sort of minimum for the genre.

Thanks guys - I appreciate you taking the time to look. BTW, people don’t seem aware of the new category for panoramas - I’ve noticed several uploaded today but only one or two have used the new category.

All the best, John
