and many many thanks for the detailed reply. Your 1/1000th worked great - I guess it was exactly the right thing to do especially because of the strong available light. I often wish I had such a possibility of controlling on my film camera. This is both what I miss most, and also what makes up for a bit of more "agony" until the images come out. Even bracketing can't really replace a visual control of what happened with a shot.
I don't find the shadow on his face to be disturbing the overall impression. OK, perhaps a bit less strong face/expression characteristics than on the highlighted parts, but it is a "well defined" shadow.
Interesting to know that you just waited until good luck knocked on your door. Still I doubt that this happens only out of coincidence. There is also some kind of "smelling" in advance where somebody is likely going to be standing, etc. It seems to include some kind of knowledge about average human behavior, if you like.
Thanks a lot for the details again, and I'd be very happy to join such discussions in the time coming.

Thanks very much for your in-depth critique, Nick. I really do appreciate when someone takes the time to look at an image in some detail.
Textures: I find this lens picks them up pretty well, just as long as I have used a fast enough shutter to remove any hint of shake. At full zoom, standard practice says 1/300th, but I find I generally need to go much faster, hence the 1/1000th.
Exposure: checking back, I see that I used multi-segment auto exposure without any compensation. However, I had taken care to position myself very precisely in relation to the late afternoon sun that was behind me. I usually use the Nikon in-camera facility to check for blown-out areas after I have taken a shot. Furthermore, having shot this in raw format, I would have been able to make any minor adjustments necessary in post-processing. Perhaps one concern I have here is the shadow on the face, but I think I may have just got away with that.
Selective focus: that was the easy bit! Lens wide open at full zoom. Done. And you are absolutely right - the background was very messy and distracting.
Timing: I had set up the shot and just got lucky with the pose.
Contrast: already adjusted a little, but not too much to lose the detail.
So once again, thanks very much - I will happily enter into more detailed discussions when time permits.

Hi AJ!
What a flattering pose you got here, indeed! The proud of the arena on a very special moment! ;-) It has both humorous and serious aspects combined on a single image, and so it is something that deserves acknowledgement.
On the technical aspects, I am very impressed by the texture on his jacket, hat and his skin on the neck. And also by the very well balanced exposure that kept good details both on the highlights and on the shadows. Most of the time either the shadows underexposed or the lights are overexposed, but this image is an example pf how important a good metering (or estimation) of the light/exposure can be. BTW, could you tell us something more about your light metering/estimation here?
You selective focus worked very well here too. Without letting the background look as soft there would be too much disturbance/interfering with the main object.
The timing has also been just about perfect. I know that it may sound quite silly now, if I say that it is a split of a second during which that man had the "isolation" from the world for doing somethig very personal. It's that kind of willingly introduced thought that nobody's looking. Quite funny, since of course a huge number of people were looking, but also quite human I guess. Many would name that "a fail" - for me it is only human.
All in all a very well shot image. Only perhaps a small bit more contrast.

Thanks Avi. I did feel a little guilty posting this one - definitely candid and no, I didn't have his permission! He is actually a country gentleman who is very typical of the region and who did very well at the fair, winning a number of awards.
