About My first attempt at HDR. A pool that, when not dry, feeds a waterfall off the sand stone bluffs of the El Malpais National Monument.

As I said, this is my first HDR. Anybody having HDR toning experience care to comment or provide any tips?

Great composition, Dave, with all those diagonals converging and pointing to the sunlit rocks in the distance. 7/7

Thanks, Brigitte. I'm surprised you like this more subdued version than the other of the same scene: http://www.usefilm.com/Image.asp?ID=1375120

Anyway, I'll drop you a line on HDR... but knowing how resourceful you are, I'm betting you already know by now.

You clearly get a 7 for this one Dave... it is outstanding. That said, can you explain what HDR is? I am unfamiliar with this term.

I've seen the original Dave. Great difference in tones and colors. It's well worth.

Thanks, John... yup, something fun to play with so I'll be experimenting quite a bit.

Thanks, AJ. I must agree with you, it doesn't jump out as an HDR. but compared to the original normal exposure (flat colors), there is a major difference. One of the things I didn't do correctly is expose by +/-2 f stops. Only +/-1.

And perhaps, as they say, not every scene works well in HDR. When I prepared this, the though went through my mind that the changes I was making could also be easily made in PS through adjustment layers. But then I'd have been dealing with noise, too.

And I am glad you could see the large pool. Yes, the blue/gray pool inside of it is merely where water sits after the flow stops over the fall.

I'll be going back since this place is real close to me. I only had a few minutes after the tourists left to catch a bit of dusk. I'll be trying some different angles to try and capture this "bowl" in a more easily defined way.

Thank you, Sandip. In a way, the HDR in this photo is fairly subtle.

Beautiful shot Dave! I've also begun experimenting with HDR imaging using Photomatix. I'm pretty much automated at this point while I'm learning the toning techniques. An interesting way to image. I generally shoot identical RAW images at extreme exposures to combine. You've done well here with this one. Keep doin' it. -john

You're going to get another "no" from me, Dave - regarding knowing anything about HDR, that is. Though based on HDRs I have seen on UF, this did not immediately strike me as one...

The scene itself is quite spectacular, especially with the sun highlighting the rockface. But I'm struggling a little with scale - only the mountains in the distance give any idea of the scale of the foreground. It took me a while to spot that the sandstone pool to which you refer is more than the small oval area outlined in grey on the right.

I have no experience in HDR. But, this is fabulous. Beautiful soft light and a grt exposure to bring out the patterns in fg. In my untrained eyes it does not look like an HDR. Excellent.

Best Regards,
-sandip
