Wow... I can't believe you go your golden to cooperate for this kind of a shot. I think it has very nice focus, and it is a good place to shoot. I kind of agree that its not the best portrait, but it really isnt a portrait type shot. I think its a very nice "scene" or "event" shot if you will, because the climbing seems to be as much a subject as the dog.
My reccomendation if you want to try a portrait would be to move closer and to the left and capture some more of the tree on the left edge and make the head larger and off to the right of the center. this will make it more of a traditional portrait while still including the tree as an element of it. Just a thought, nice work.

Good shot Kim. I think you should have used some fill flash to pick up the brightness in his eyes. You have lovely dogs. Lucky you

Kim, I think this is quite good. I like the closeness of this one as opposed to the other one. Did you put the dog in the tree?! Real cute! Oh, he's a climber!
