No, unfortunately I don´t have such a lens which is also why the herons far up in the trees are out of my photographic reach so to speak:-)

Nice capture given the circumstances Joe...:))) Have been trying to catch ours here, fishing below the dam wall where the turbulance swings to the bank...
Extra nice with both nests and the starkness of the bare tree limbs...:)))
Excellent Sir...:)))

Thanks very much Annemette for all your nice comments. Do you have a telephoto lens? You need atleast a 300mm lens to capture birds like this. Even then I was pushing it. Best regards, Joe

Thanks Robbie, although he looks lonely in this shot, he has lots of neighbours. Most of the other nests are being used by herons or owls. All the best, Joe

Joe,
I would buy the same lens if I had it to do over again. I like the extra light gathering power. The 300mm F4 is also a great choice if size and cost are a factor. I have also heard that the 400mm f5.6 prime is an excellent bird-in-flight lens. I would also consider the 400 DO for its light weight and compact size (expensive though).

I think you did well here, Joe, considering the sky and lack of tripod. Such a beautiful bird. I found some big old trees the other day were lots of herons were nesting. I´ve never seen this before, so it was a very special sight. I couldn´t get a shot anywhere near as good as yours though. Take care Annemette

Joe -- Thanks so much for getting back to me with this fascinating avian education. As you can tell, I know next to nothing about birds and the idea of community nests and cross-species occupation while another species still "owns" the territory is eye-opening to me. --Best to you, Jan

Thanks for the comments Jan. Each nest is used by a nesting pair of herons. It is not uncommon to find 3 or more nests in a tree. The tree shown here actually has 3 nests, the third nest is just below the bottom of the image. Many of wetlands in the area have numerous blue heron nests, some have sites may have 50 or more nests. Check out the attached shot taken last winter at another rookery. Sometimes other birds, usually owls, will use a blue heron nest. In fact, there was a great horned owl on a nest in a tree just to the right of the above shot. Best regards, Joe

Thanks Todd, I'm not surprised that it's a bit of a chore to carry around. Knowing what you know now regarding the portability and capability of this lens what would you now if you were to going to purchase a telephoto prime lens, buy this lens or would you go for something a little lighter and less expensive like the 300mm 4.0? Regards, Joe

Joe -- Overcast aside I still like the shot and I understand these birds are not easy photo prey. Interesting the two side-by-side nests; are they for two different species or is this bird inclined to make extra room for bigger broods? --Best to you, Jan

Hi Joe,
That lens is on the limit of portability. When I get back to the car, I am glad to set it down. Still, it is manageable. I think my right arm is about an inch longer than the left now. ;^)

You have done a fabulous work here. I love the mood and the minimum elements here, yet it has a very defined story. Very good wildlife shot dear Joe. Best regards, Bhabesh P.S. And thanks for telling me the red eye effect on that portrait. I should have been more careful before uploading!

Thanks very much Todd, when I get results like this I keep thinking that I need to invest in a lens like you have, the 300mm 2.8. Surely I could have got a sharper image with that lens. How is that lens to carry around when hiking to some of the more remote locations? I know it is fairly large. All the best, Joe

Excellent shot considering the conditions. I am amazed how much of a difference light makes. No equipment in the world can handle that low contrast very well.
Superb!

I'm sure you'll be able to get a closer shot in the future, Joe, in the meantime, you've got this one! You've still got a good shot of the environment they nest in. Dave.
