As CC, I think the crop suggested is good. It emphasizes the child's energy/impatience and the mother's resignation. But the wider photo is also good, for suggesting something else. They each emphasize different things.

Daithi, I took your advice and cropped the photo. A new version is posted with the new crop and a few other minor fixes. Thanks so much for your advice!

Brent, I'll write the same thing about this one as the first one that I saw. It is a wonderful "street" scene!
The picture of a mother taking the limited time alone with her little boy, while the world rushes by much too fast.
I do like this crop for the way the subjects are isolated and in their own little world for the time being. To tell you the truth, although they both work well, this might even be the better of the two images. Andre

This is a beautiful scene. I agree with the suggested crop, not so much because of the distraction of the pillar, but because it concentrates the eye on the two main subjects. Otherwise, the train sweeps us right out of the picture! Very nicely done.

Daithi, I definitely agree about the pillar on the left being distracting. I have been puzzling over how to crop this one all week. I'll probably post a cropped and/or edited version in a few days. By the way, this shot was taken in Japan. It's the Narita Express platform in Tokyo Station. Thanks for the comment!

I don't think I've ever seen a station "looking" so empty in Tokyo before! It's an excellent photo (and I'm guessing it was taken off-the-cuff?). I wonder how cropping the photo to focus only on the mother and child as the train zips by would be? I say this only because I didn't like the small bit of piller that could be seen to the left foreground of the image. Anyway, I cropped the image a lot and posted it for you to consider. With the mom and child only and the small amount of kanji in the train window, it makes the location a little more obscure (is it China, Japan??)
