About
The pictures on show here are part of a display at the Woodhorn Colliery museum. In 1934 Robert Lyon, an academic and artist from Durham University formed a painting club called the Ashington Group, formed almost exclusively of miners who had never painted before, and in many cases had never even seen a real painting. The group ran for many years, until it was finally dissolved in 1982. It is documented in the book "Pitmen Painters" by William Feaver.
Very nicely composed shot, Dave! This has particular interest for me, as my Mom's family has a line of coal miners from South Wales. I like your composition with the man studying the paintings. Dave.
