About Another shot of my daughter, she's a great model!

Hesitant to post due to some obvious problems, however, it's still a keeper for me!

Thanks Derek! That interesting info on Lulu.com - I'll check it out sometime - it's a good idea! I've been printing 8x10 (or so) images when a good one comes along.
Cheers,
Kes

Thanks Eb! As it turns out, I kind of like the inclusion of her shadow on the background...glad she ended up on that side of the bench!

Your kids are going to love you even more for all of these amazing photographs they're going to have of their childhood. Each one a memory of their Dad. You should put together a book with all the photos you have taken of them. Lulu.com has free publishing that you could have a pro book printed in a couple days and even sell if you wanted. It's a very satisfying thing to have a book with your photos in it! If you dont know how to compile it I could for you!

A very striking image with the lighting and the background- seems almost timeless. Having seen the lovely spontaneous laughter and relaxation of both in the other picture, this serious expression of strength dignity and character is a great achievement.

Great, Kes! No complaints here, just a smile. The offcentre placement adds some tension and reinforces the deadpan effect. It does mimic old time portraiture!

Hi Susie, thanks! For a previous shot I made a "tent" and they took turns going inside...great fun all around!
Best regards, Kes

Hi Andre,

It seems easier to get into the "old time" mode with an old camera. Nevertheless, perhaps this would be as good one to try with the D80 someday. So far, no boredom expressed by either of them...

I'm enjoying it! :)

Thanks Ray ! As I recall, this was window light. Indeed both my children can smile...just the mention of boogers or some silly thing and there it is! :)

I love this Kes ~ fantastic expression and great model you have in your daughter.. I actually don't mind the light ~ the set-up puts me in mind of how a travelling photographer might have operated back in the pioneer days using a makeshift tent.. and I love Andre's suggestion of a little brother bolting ~ it makes her expression even more precious ~ LOL!
best to you, susie

Hi Kes,
I've been away for a while and missed this one.
A very charming portrait! Your daughter reminds me of one of my neices. They seem like they have similar personalities (at least from your images) and are about the same age. The fact that she is sitting over to one side can mean one of two things. You are going for the composition on purpose.... or the little brother got bored and took off on you :) In any case, it works well!

I love the effects you have created here and I certainly don't think you wound up in a ditch with this one Kes. The details are great and the lighting has assisted in creating an old time period study so the decision to shoot in monochrome was excellent. She looks absolutely wonderful in that pose, very photogenic and so very pretty. I am relieved to read that she possesses a wonderful smile, that you must share with us sometime. All the very best to you my good friend......Ray:)

Thanks Radim! I am now more concerned about the pattern of her dress (white lines) by her hands. That all blown-out area is confusing. I did some burning and dodging on this shot....missed that area.

:)
Cheers,
Kes

Thanks Karina! Access to a better scanner is available, but it seems I've already packed the negs away. Oh well, by the time/year they are dug out the scanners should be mind boggling.

...a great thing about film...

Hi Rachel, thanks! You are quite perceptive, as I recall the shutter speed being fairly slow here...perhaps 1/30 second or so.
Cheers,

Hi Gary, thanks for the input! Yes, blew the lighting...I've lost my notes but I was using an old General Electric light meter. It works fair, but you have to guestimate some areas...like her face. I actually brightened this a bit...my thinking was that the better apparent contrasts would be viewed more favorably - even with the obvioius blow outs. This thinking may have been incorrect, sometimes you just make a decision and run with it. :)

Sometimes you end up in the ditch!!
:)

Cheers,
Kes

Hi Kes! That's a great portrait shot from your lovely

Kes, this is a beauty. And your daughter is getting better and better, as a model I mean :)
I guess this kind of pics needs to be seen on paper. Scans never are the same somehow. Still, I enjoy it very much.

So serious! It reminds me of those olden day photos when people didn't smiole because they had to sit so long for the long shutter! She is a cutie though, I like your effects to it, it's very interesting, and just a great portrait! Excellent work :)

It's what a face doesn't say that tells you the most. Love the concept and composition. Lighting may be a touch too harsh, though.
