About This image (7495) was shot on the street in front of Madame K's restaurant on 13 August 2006.

This is a photograph about a specific subject, so I suppose I should make a point of mentioning it. There is a certain tradition, here and there, of lighting a candle in the window awaiting someone's return.

This is the story of the candle that is left to burn itself down when that someone will not return, the candle that those who have waited cannot bring themselves to extinguish.

The candle itself is from a pair of neon style signs above the entrance (a red pair of lips and a pink Madame K's sign). The candle itself is luxagraphic.

The background has been modified in PS to bring out more interesting details. I'm no PS wizard so I'm all ears where that's concerned.

I basically altered the levels to bring out details in the background. The candle was moved to a different layer and was only corrected to blend it together with what the background ended up as. Then I respliced to two layers and mopped up the fisure between them. Then of course shrunk, resized, and uploaded.

I felt the rustic background was appropriate to this end.

Anyway, I look forward to your questions, comments, and criticisms.

John - Thanks. The grain is a product of the PS work I did on the background. The out of camera shot is posted near the top of this thread. I'll look for your christmas light posts.

WOW! That looks like a candle's fire! Stunning, if the grain wasn't so strong...anyway, original.
I play with light too on Cmas tree....and takes some characters too but nothing like all these you have done here!

was drawn to this one in the thumbnails...really like the way you framed shot with candle off to one side and prominent in FG...i like the texturized background which lends depth to the image...the about "brings it home"...you have quite the artistic sensibility,James

This is very good James... I love how the background gives the hint of a window frame (at least to me that is what I see.. with the four panes opening to the outside world)

Burning the candle for lost souls is something I practice often with my beliefs... in fact there is a spell to bring home the lost that involves this old tradition & I must say that is what drew me to this photo in your portfolio. You have many great shots here of late... I must pop back sometime soon (though be patient because my computer is really not playing nice at the mo)

I also love your about here.. very informative not just with the info behind this shot but also the work that went into it... well done. :)

Mary - Thank you. Creating that rustic look for the background was important in my vision. I wanted the candle to stand on its own in an old and fading world, conveying the idea that the candle was going to soon (too soon) expire and the old world (older than the candle) would be all that remained.

I can't add much to the technique you used, James, as I feel that it fulfilled its purpose, but the "about" very much speaks to me. I hope you'll forgive me for bringing this up, but that's my association. The recent war in Lebanon started after the Hezbollah killed about eight of our soldiers on Israeli ground & kidnapped another two. So far they would not release a single sign of life, nor let that Red Cross visit the kidnapped soldiers. So the last candle fits the mood of their families & with them that of all of us here.
Thank you for your recent comments. I'm contemplating your idea of adding a face to my sunset & will try to do it.
Ragards,
Rafi

Doyle - Oh, sure. That's good stuff. It tells a different tale (from what I relate above).

If I were to tell the same tale a crop like yours could be part of a tripartite arrangement: house (or something to suggest that), candle (similar to my main post), and close-up (I would probably make the crop from the original and not the rustic version).

Yeah, that might be interesting too.

Anyway, thanks for taking an interest. See you around.

Raquel - Thank you. I really liked the effect I could get in the background by manipulating the levels, but I wanted to keep the candle as it was in the original (or close to it). I'm glad you are pleased with the result. I was uncertain.

James, I see your picture like a combination of two technics. Background is some graphic-art, candle is neon-art. Good composition!
