Paul, i think you made an excelent point. The tree should not be the subject of the image. It would be nice if the tree would act as an additional cadre around the mountains.

Salvatore, it's not so much exposure or PS work i was thinking about, but probably changing the point of view. Moving to the left and lowering the camera would have made the tree stand out against the sky.

This photo is very sharp, bright, and inviting. I like the composition and the contrast between the sky and land.

I guess Wouter is suggesting masking the joshua tree and then perhaps darkening the rest of the shot or reducing the contrast.
That would, of course, imply that the foreground element is, in fact, the subject. I don't see it that way. I see the sweeping expanse as the subject, and the foreground just a nice technique to pull the eye further into the landscape.

Wouter, how could the tree have been separated from the background? Are you able to photoshop this image to illustrate your intention? I'd really like to see what you mean. I thank you for your comment and your constructive critisism and would love to see the result. Sal

Great colors, esp. the contrast between the earth and the sky. I think the concept behind the composition is OK, but the tree should be more separated from the background. That would have a lot more depth to the image.
