About Class Project: Tribute to Rene Magritte

I had a lot of fun putting this together. It is an omage to Margitte's persistent bowler capped figure.

well..
here--
a little gift for you:

THE INVISIBLE MAN
(Queen)

I'm the invisible man
I'm the invisible man
Incredible how you can
See right through me

Freddie Mercury

When you hear a sound
That you just can't place
Feel something move
That you just can't trace
When something sits
On the end of your bed
Don't turn around
When you hear me tread

I'm the invisible man
I'm the invisible man
Incredible how you can
See right through me
I'm the invisible man
I'm the invisible man
It's criminal how I can
See right through you

John Deacon

And I'm in your room
And I'm in your bed
And I'm in your life
And I'm in your head
Like the CIA
Or the FBI
You'll never get close
Never take me alive

I'm the invisible man
I'm the invisible man
Incredible how you can
See right through me
I'm the invisible man
I'm the invisible man
It's criminal how I can
See right through you

Hah, hah, hah, hello
Hah, hah, hah, OK
Hah, hah, hah, hello-hello-hello-hello

Never had a real good friend
Not a boy or a girl
No one knows what I've been through
Let my flag unfurl
So I make my mark
From the edge of the world
From the edge of the world
From the edge of the world

Brian May Brian May

Now I'm on your track
And I'm in your mind
And I'm on your back
But don't look behind
I'm your meanest thought
I'm your darkest fear
But I'll never get caught
You can't shake me, shake me dear

I'm the invisible man
I'm the invisible man
Incredible how you can
See right through me
I'm the invisible man
I'm the invisible man
It's criminal how I can
See right through you

Look at me, look at me
Shake me, shake me, shake me dear

Roger Taylor!

but also is to hear!!!
ciao
roby

good week end

Hi James, I used a very thin black thread and it was virtually invisible. The PS touch-up for this was insignificant. Perhaps fishing line would have worked better. I DID think of using it, but I didn't have any immediately available. Convenience was a major factor here. :~) I know that there is a very thin nylon thread that magicians use but again, I didn't have this available. I'm sure with sufficient motivation, time and planning this kind of thing could be done much better.

You're welcome, Carlen. I had to order the hat which took about a week to get. Setting up the body took about 2-3 hours to get everything right. It was just one probelm after another to get it to stand-up straight and get the collar to stand up. Mind you, if I had a manequin this would have all been a lot simpler. I was just making do with things I had available. The hat was a bit of a problem for a while. Originally it was dangling from one thread but kept spinning. Finally, I put two threads through it (well, really just one long looping thread) to stop the spinning. Positioning the hat was always an ordeal which took most of the set-up time. Once it stopped moving, I could position the camera to get the angle I wanted as well as play with the exposures.

I spent 2 days in all shooting these. I have numerous shots in several places and with several backgrounds. This was one of the better ones.

I wonder if using fishing line will help vanish the lines more easily? You said thread, but maybe you are already using something near invisible (which still has to be removed).

Hello Wouter! Your child portraits are amazing! Thank you for taking a look at my work. I agree with you about the background. I did try to even out the lighting as best as I could in PS (it was even worse than this originally). In the end, however, I resigned myself to accept this as the proof that it was a photo and not a painting.
I probably won't be revisiting this project in the near future but I WILL learn from your excellent eye and apply it where I can in the future. Thanks very much for the critique and comments. ~ Warm regards, Rocky

Thank you very much, Hugo! I am honored by your comment as I admire your work very much. Yes, there is an unmistakeable simplicity to using a bowler hat and suit, isn't there? Magritte managed to keep it fresh and interesting with each painting of it.
Thanks again. ~ Warm regards, Rocky

Hi Carlen,
Sure! I'd love to share what it did.

I used a large throw-pillow and very thick piece of corrogated cardboard with two belts strapping them all together. Then I proceeded to dress this with the shirt and tie. The colar was held open with some bailing wire and another stiff piece of cardboard is pinned at the back to give it height. Areas at the shoulders and sleeves are stuffed with whatever I could find (socks, towels, etc...). This was draped on the back of a bar-stool which held it up. The hat was threaded at the top (twice to stop spinning) dangled from a microphone boom-stand (off frame). The threads were cloned out in PS.
Here's a long shot of the set-up for another image I did so you can see the boom-stand that held the hat.

This was really fun! I enjoyed it tremendously.
Thanks for looking.
~ Warm regards, Rocky

That's what i thought immediately when i looked at the thumbnail: Magritte. Well done!
A minor detail: i think the image could have been better if the background was more evenly lighted.
