About This is two pictures stichted together. I am wondering if including the two docks is a distraction in this. I'd appreciate your opinion. Thanks.

Not at all.. I wouldn't change a thing in here. The silhouette is a stunning contrast to the vibrant colours of the sky. You did a fabulous job stitching them together.

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique Nice crisp sihouettes Mary . . . and rich, well saturated color. Prefer this (myself) to the lavendar skies . . . though I know others would disagree. Something about it feels more realistic I guess . . . Excellent work!

Hi Mary,

First of all what a lovely picture, definitely going into my favourites.Great colours, composition, everything. This is the type of shots I would like to take.Secondly, you ask the question about the docks. I tend to agree with Nick on this one with regards to the one on the right. It does jump out out a bit, but it does not at all do an injustice to this shot. Very Well Done!!!

Cheers,
Stef

Great coloring, especially the contrast of the vivid colors to the shadow theater of the hills far away and the foreground, Mary! The sudden black to color contours make this very very atmospheric, if I may use this expression.

The dock on the right is perhaps a bit too obtrusive, but still it deosnt' reach the level of a distraction. It simply "jumps" into my eyes right away. But thene again, the silhouette of the gull does exactly the same and still adds to the photo. Perhaps it is that the dock at the right doesn not converge to the same direction as the rest of the (imaginary) perspective lines do? (See attachment.)

The only thing that I find not so nice is the jigsaw effects on the leaves of the tree on the right side.

Nonetheless great work!

Have a nice day,

Nick

Hi Alberto. Thanks for the comment. If you look under 'Photo Forums' then 'Forums List'you will see 'Panoramic Photography Forum' then go to 'Wide Format'. The discussion is about using the panoramic view option. Basically, if your picture has a ratio of width to height that is 2:1 or greater, it will upload as a panoramic posting and will show the 'click here'.

Beautiful image, Mary. Sure, the two docks are a little distracting, but with such a wide field of view you don't have much choice. The bird seems a tad out of focus, did you use the hyperfocal point? Or, maybe it was motion blur with the longer exposure.

A really memorable image, not surprised that four viewers made this one a favourite.

Hi Eb. Well, a number of people seem to feel that the dock on the right does not add a lot esthetically to this picture and, in fact, is a bit heavy. I can see that after looking at it some more. Thanks for your comment.

Georgeous pano, Mary! I like the bold saturation of colours. The foreground silhouette has interesting detail - except the large block of dock on the right. To my eyes this appears a bit heavy and intrusive and angles the wrong way, essentially blocking eye movement. I am sure you have made up your mind by now - with all this advice!

Hi Valery. Thanks for the information on the panoramic makers. It seems this is something I may be intersted in, so I should invest in a program that will help out. The way I did it, it would take me hours to put more than a couple of pictures together.

Hi Mary. You’ve got a good eye for a good picture and you tend to a wide format. That’s right, We look at the landscape panorama-like and we should use panoramic format when photographing scenery. But please buy a specialized stitching program. You will see the difference. As an amateur astronomer (like me) you know that a great star cataloguing work was done even before 1610. But isn’t it better to do it with a help of a telescope. And the bigger the better. Depending on a budget. A good stitching program costs about 50 dollars. I stitch 20 frames in 5-10 minutes. 35 frames in 15. Sorry, not me, my computer does the job. I only correct small mistakes in PS. In another words go to The Panorama Factory or PanoramaStudio sites, download their trial versions and you will see how easy it is to make a pan. It is difficult to find a good scenery, it is difficult to be in a good location at a proper time. But it is better that way than doing hard manual toil. Good luck in pan work. Valery

Mary, the stitching together of these photos was done well. The colors and silhouetting is wonderful. I must admit my eyes did gravitate more to the dock to the right, not as much as a distraction may because of the larger dark mass in that area. Nice composition!

Hi Sam. Thank you so much for the compliment. I am flatered that you have chosen this for one of your favourites. We go to this lake in the summertime when we can. The sunsets are remarkable and I love sitting watching them. It's good for the soul.

A fabulous concoction of golden yellows, ambers, burnt oranges with rusty reds and browns in this awesome sunset scenario. The inclusion of two docks is not a distraction as it is great to have these and other elements in foreground silhouette. Well done to you sweet MAry.. I took some more time out so I am a little bit behind with commenting. My very best wishes to you as always......Ray;)

Mary,

When I Looked at this image before I signed off the computer for the night, it stopped me dead in my tracks.

I could see myself sitting there with a glass of my favorite libation and just admiring that grand view.

I would have probably missed the capture because of the state of AWE I would have been in.
Everything is so peacefull and perfect.
Well done on all aspects.
No the dock are not a distraction. They to me help lead the eye into the shot and add a lot to the picture.
Well done and presented.
My Best Regards

Sam III

I love this and I feel the two docks help give a feeling of the conditions with the silhouetting.

I dont' think the docks distracting, Mary. I think it emphasizes the depth and I know it's a dock, so I can feel the location, as though I am sitting watching this beautiful moment. Great work, my dear.

This is beautiful and I love the bird. It adds the feeling of depth. I also like the red reflection. Regarding the docks. I think the one on the left is good as it also adds a feeling of depth. I wonder if it might be better to either show a little more of the one on the right or perhaps remove it. Just enough is shown that it sort of leaves you guessing. Regardless it is a beautiful photo. Del.

What a beautiful sunset.. the colours are so rich & deep & the bird silhouettes add perfectly. I think the docks balance the photo well & draw attention to the bird silhouettes to the left of shot... definately no distraction caused in my humble opinion.

Gorgeous Mary.

Hope you are well & bright x

This is really a showcase, I like how you see the nature through your lens.
Excellent range of contrast, amazing unnoticed stitching work and your panoramic size of excellent choice to show the nature beauty.
Artistically will be better to eliminate the right docks, although is not disturbing.
Well executed work.

I like this one even more, Mary, for the warmer splendid colours an for the foreground elements that give more depth and interest to the scene. I think that you have well done to keep the two docks as, for me, the dark, solid silouhettes in the front give weiht and anchor the image.

I like the docks, though if I had to be very critical then I would say that the bush on the right is more of a distraction. However, if you hadn't of asked I would have just said a superb shot. Well done.
