About These ropes pull on a kind of bell, and you are supposed to yank on them to let the gods know you are presenting a petition. Then you throw your donation into the box behind the ropes. Most appear to throw in a coin or two. Some will fold up a banknote and throw that. Not many of the latter, though you do see it at the new year, where shrines make most of their money from people hoping for a happy one.

I put this one in Critiquer's Corner because I'm finding the transition from film to digital more difficult than I thought. I find the 18mm "wide" end of the zoom that came with my D200 very restrictive--you can see how the image absolutely fills the frame corner to corner here. I usually like a bit more room than that... I did get the 10.5mm fisheye lens with the camera, but the much narrower dynamic range of digital images vs. film makes it more difficult to use than my (otherwise very similar) film-based fisheye lens. (Wide FOV = wider range of contrast in the subject, all too often). So I'd appreciate any comments from more experienced users (and of course on this image, too).

Step back! kekeke Sorry I'm in fine form this evening. I like this very much it's good and clear and the color is true and rich. The only nit to pick is you cut off the top of the roof peak, tsk tsk.

I forgot to say that I loved working with my 10-22 but I do not do nearly as much wide-angle work as you Roger......Take care....Ray

I missed this shot yesterday Roger and wish I were able to do A&B comparisons. Digital is different in many ways as you are finding out; the effects from familiar size lenses is all down to the size sensors in my 30D and your D200. Canon do two camera bodies with full size sensors but they are prohibitive in cost. I have the Canon 10-22 zoom which will be on par with the Nikon equivalent or indeed something from the very fine Sigma range.
I am not familiar with the D200 but my own camera has the means to alter contrast/lighting situations and I am sure the D200 will have the same kind of facilities.

I do like your composition Roger and although the edges of it are missing (something that doesn't bother me) the main emphasis is the prayer ropes and these have been captured splendidly. The colours are rich, powerful and very beautful and the clarity of this shot is excellent. Well done to you my friend and thank-you for the info in the 'about', always a welcome read with one of your posts. My very best wishes to you as always....Ray

Thanks, Joe. I was standing on the corner of the flat area, on tip toe, for this one. No chance to go back any further. But your suggestion about stitching is a GREAT idea. I already do that a lot for panoramas and it didn't even occur to me in this case. Duh! The other day I went to my favourite camera shop and discussed 12-24mm and 10-15mm lenses with the expert, and he was most dismissive. "Not good enough quality!" he said very firmly. "Couldn't recommend them." He definitely lost a sale because of that... In fact, looking at some of the good results obtained by others with these lenses, I am not sure he was right. He was probably setting me up to buy the good but VERY expensive Nikon 12-24mm now I come to think of it... Stitching is the way to go! Thanks so much.

my 2nd thought on this large subject....shoot it in sections then stitch together...that could work...cheers

unless you want to shell out a minimum of $500 for one of those non-Nikon 12-24mm 10-15mm type lenes I would try using the thoughts I read by a famous photographer on his answer to the best
wide angle lens...
"take a few steps back before shooting"
regarding photo...good colors, but too many corners cut off from main subject....cheers
