This is the most incredible macro I have ever seen. It's hard to believe you've captured so much detail, in fact it's hard to believe the insect has so many intrinsic details. God must have played a part in creating both Regards

Wonderful macro and well deserved BIP. The detail is great. A real treat to see this bad boy of a fly so close and with the petal's colors it is a great composition. Thanks for your great images and great comments. Be well, Stan

Oh my, this just awesome Joggie. The details, colors, and light are incredible. I love the domination of the Amethyst color in this photo. It makes it look like a very fine piece of jewelery. I would love to have this made in a pin/brooch for me. Congratulations on BIP- WEll DESERVED!

Very impressive capture. I have a Canon equipment and for this kind of capture I use a specialised lens, the canon mp-e which works only in the range 1:1 to 5:1. The Nikkor 105 macro coupled with the Pentagor macro converter offers quite similiar or equal results but a better freedom of action.
I tried the new Nikkor 105 micro VR and the resolution is impressive. Try it.
Compliments for your works.

Thanks Melisa - The Nikkor 105 micro lens is very sharp and bad results is definitely not due to poor optics. The new Nikkor 105mm micro VR is, according to test reviews, even better. For this shot I did use the Panagor 2.75X macro converter between the lens and the camera (I loose a bit of definition with the converter but not much as you can see). The converter give me magnification of almost 4X lifesize with the 105mm. One big factor for good images with enough DoF is enough light. Even without the converter, full sunshine and 400ISO you will rarely get better than f19. I use a powerful old Sunpak 8XBR ringflash which allows me to shoot at 1/200th sec and f32 to f45 at an ISO of 320 without the converter and between f8 and f19 with the converter depending on the distance from the subject.
How do I get them to keep so still - I just approach them very slowly and try shooting early morning and late afternoon when they are far less active. I rarely use a tripod for macros, rather a monopod or a stick or anything is can use to stabilize. A tripod is too clumsy and big and one chases of the bugs before you even start.
Kind regards and a prosperous 2007 for you and your family! Joggie

I have to say you take a gross bug and make it into a colorful art. Do you use some type of converter with your posted lens? I have been researching this lens and all the websites show pictures far inferior to the details of yours. Another questions is how do you get all these bugs to sit still?:)
