Don't worry Colin. We all come across sites like that. The main thing is to photograph for yourself. Then you will always win.

Great to hear from you, Judi. I've been trying the different photosites (I'm now up to four. inc this one) One is particularly snobby - begins with photo and ends with net. I submitted this image, 1100 views but zero critiques! I eventually got one, which said:

1- is not a sharp image 2- the sky is "burned"-white, in some place 3-the colors are dead- all mostly b&W.

The above quote does not address the artistic, 'essence', of an image. It seems all technical and clinical obsession, over on that site. I know there's lots of noise, but that is my novice technique (and poss my new S2) - I'm more into the spirit of an image. After all, a pure photo, can be 100% technically excellent, but can be spritually dead to the viewer.

Excellent capture. The strong sunrays really make their presence known.

Can't think how I missed this one, Colin. A lovely image, very powerful and quite dramatic. I don't know anything about digital cameras but what looks like grain in the sky rather surprises me. This is another image where a graphic program like PaintShop Pro would give you lots of tools to play with in trying to optimize the effects you wanted.

Gorgeous scene, Colin, and well captured! I wish that there wasn't so much digital noise in the sky. I'm not sure what caused this but I've heard of a program called Neat Image that can clean it up a bit. Although I haven't tried it, I think there might be a free trial on their website.
Looks like quite a peaceful place!

Dear Colin,
I like the way the isolated tree dominates the horizon in this photo of yours. Thr diagonal sunrays seen on the background of the clowds make for an excellent composition.
Thank you for your very generous comment on my "Avove Aqaba" and for putting it in your favorites.
I don't know if I ever sent you Rachel's stories. Originally written in Hebrew, I translated five of them so far, two or three pages each. In case I already sent you some, please let me know and I'll send you the rest. Unless it's changed, I have your e mail address in your bio.
Best regards,
Rafi

Thanks a lot, Len. I like your comment about space and wonder. The cheviot skies have such magical light, that you really appreciate 'the bit above the land'!

This is a superb camera, but it's only flaw is, it seems to introduce lots of noise grain - in grey tones only.

Colin

Fantastic shot, Colin. Great sense of space, but it's the sky that fills me with wonder!

This is actually two images, Bob. The land had a uniform, drab grey sky above it. The dramatic sky came an hour later. So I just blended the two. The grainy sky, is a combination of a 5m pixel camera, and lots of contrast enhancement. I didn't think it would be noticeable on a small web file!

Colin this is excellent but is it ment to be grainy? you have lost the sky a bit maybe to much contrast? other than that it is a stunning shot
Colin!!!!!well taken my friend cheers.Bob Aldridge

Thanks for the thoughtful comment Markus, Here is the original dull sky and the dramatic sky, taken a couple of hours later from the hill. I blended the two images.

Danke für Ihre durchdachte Anmerkung, Markus. Sind hier die zwei Bilder, die ich mischte. Der ursprüngliche stumpfe Himmel und der drastische Himmel, zwei Stunden später, über Hügel Kilham genommen.

Very strong and imaginative picture, Colin. It certainly was worth the PS work you did, but would also be interesting to see the original.

I love the minimal look of this it's a great classic shot. It is a bit noisy and the clouds are a little blown out. I would like to see this image again when you work out the chinks in the armor. It should be a grand sight. I'm having trouble with noise when I zoom too so I'll be interested to see what others advise to fix it. I heard a pro said he uses two or more images to get something like this. You meter to get the clouds perfect then meter to get the grass and so on then you layer them and use the good bits from each. Cheers marra.

I like your composition, with the angled divide between sky and ground, Colin! The solitary tree emphasizes the emptiness of the landscape, but you've got nice details in the texture of the field.
Dave.

I appreciate your thoughtful critique, Sally. Just the type of quality feedback, I like! It looks noisy, because I had to do a lot of work in PS to enhance everything! I thought it was a worthwhile compromise to bring out the swan, from the drab and grey duckling!

It was taken on Monday, as I was walking in the hills, to prevent the deterioration of my health problems. A magical place, with lots of spiritual recharging. The Druids weren't wrong.

Regards
Colin

I really like your composition on this one - it really is super, and those rays of light shining through the clouds are fantastic.
On my monitor it looks a little noisy, and I reckon you need to add an ND grad to your kit to get the most out of a high contrast shot like this.
I also like the framing and the crop too.
