Hi Marcus! Don't know if you still drop by here from time to time, but it's still great to see wonderful shots like this of yours on the front page at UF. I tried to send you a message directly but it got returned as undeliverable. So please allow me to wish you all the best for Christmas and the New Year here.

Thanks Ian, acutaly the 100 flaps per second was a bit of a exageration on my part as I was going higher and higher on the shutter until i hit 600 at one point and still caught a bit of wing blur....

Hearty Congratulations Marcus. If anyone deserves the award it is you. Your work is always so outstanding.
This is one incredible image. The exposure to the underside is spot on and just look at the catchlight in the eyes. The wings and tail feathers are crisp sharp. Perfection from you as always.

Marcus I am running out of words to describe your amazing pictures.
Another superb image.
These guys are particularly difficult to photograph because they don't allow people to get very close.
It must be your karma that makes those birds feels comfortable and let get close to them.

Fabrizio, to answer you question, on the 100-400 as you know you need a total apperature of 5.6 to get AF with the 100-400L the 1.4X puts you at F/8 and canon intentually turns off AF due to the fact that it is so slow, but I did use the adapter with that lens as you said tapping those three pins, you will notice shooting in good lighting with the lens hood OFF, to get more light in there, AF is pretty fast, not close to without but very useable. I dont use the 1.4X with the 100-400 anymore as I have the 400 DO which is F/4 and give me a combined app of 5.6, also remember that with your camera crop and the 1.4 you are shooting a effective focal length of 900mm which is too much to hand hold at f/8 unless on a tripod on or being very steady handheld, In my opinion the slow af is not the cause of blurry or soft photos, its the handholding of a 900mm lens, somthing you never even saw someone trying until digital. even with my 5000.00 400mm F/4 I get soft shots handheld much of the time, but on a tri or monopod they are very sharp. so depending on what you are shooting you can have no problems to severe ones. my best reccommendation is use a tripod with the adapter for everything but action, and with action shoot as many frames as possible and keep your distance to the subject within reason. you can get quality shots with that lens and adapter if you pan smoothly and shoot as many frames as possible..
Hope this helps...
Marcus..

Imageopolis Featured Photo Critique ....Are you going Marcus????....I have a question:::..I've just bougth the Canon extender 1,4 to use with the 100/400 IS as yours.....so My camera is Canon 350D so a cannot keep the AF...(is possible just with the Mark II D/DS models)...the problem is the seguent..you know in the wilde shots is difficult to have the rigth time for the manual focus....so I found on the web a suggestion to keep the AF(you must to cover the last three pin conctact of the extender by the scotch) and I tried it realizing that the Af works altough slowly.....
How do you usualy work by the extender?????
thanks very much...
